I’ve spent a lifetime dreading the loss of a parent. And now it’s finally happened | Adrian Chiles | The Guardian

I’m not his biggest fan but this struck a chord having lost my Mum last year

I somehow went to the Mambo Inn when I was 15. Loved seeing all the older people dancing. Signed up for the newsletter and bought their compilation CD - which set me on a musical path.
In later years was lucky enough to work with Max Reinhardt and tell him how much it all meant to me.

Found this article about the night from 1994. Really good read!

A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole, for the umpteenth time.

Need to check this out. I am a fan but have read little of his stuff.

It’s outstanding and beautifully written. Highly recommend.

What a niche topic to write a book about. In my opinion, the topic is secondary, if the author is good, the book will be good.

I started this one about 15 years ago, but left it unfinished. Maybe it’s time to give it another shot, since it’s made so much people happy

It’s a fantastic journey through the world under our feet. Part nature writing, part travel, interweaving literature, myth and what it means to be human.

As mentioned in the Alfredo thread, this Richard Norris interview is excellent

He’s made so many amazing tunes that seemed to define different periods of my life, but not sure he ever fully got the credit he deserved?

A few from memory

Grid - ‘texas cowboys’. Hated ‘swamp thing’ (which seriously grated after the 456655th play) but this was way camper and less commercial. A banging tune which was so early 90s. A world away from the mellow ‘floatation’ which I was too young to ‘get’ at the time.

Midlake ‘Roscoe’ - all the BTWS remixes were mega but this was the one that had 4 grown men in a car close to tears. There are no words for how beautiful it is.

Time & Space Machine ‘Pill party in india’ - i loved his psychedelic direction. Saw the band perform at Rough Trade and then again at his fantastic festival at the Zu Studios in Lewes where someone was handing out philosopher’s stones from a carrier bag. Head straight to the psychemagik remix.

I see that BTWS are making a comeback. Interested to hear their new stuff.

He’s brilliant on so many levels. So many great production. The first Grid record I ever got was the 12” of Intergalactica … foolishly sold 25 years ago when I was skint. Never seen one since.

A damning description of a decaying culture, the whole article distilled into one graphic;

That’s, I was going to say great, but I think I actually mean terrifyingly accurate!
