the short story is that in oregon, if you serve legal liquor, you have to operate a full kitchen. being that portland is really the center of the vegan universe, it tracks that at least a couple of their 50-odd strip clubs would cater to both vegan customers (and vegan dancers).
I just read it an hour ago
Can someone semi qualified explain difference between EBM & New Beat ( forafriend)
To cut a long story short, early New Beat was EBM played at 33rpm +8
EBM on ecstasy?
Reading this is so cleansing. A simpler time.
Quite a succint perfect answer!
A very weird story about Samuel Smiths pubs and the guy who owns them. They always feel like odd places, now I know why.
I read this. Fascinatingly bizarre.
Could only be from Yorkshire and of course he’s a devoted Christian.
Bonkers - kind of Howard Hughes meets a Dickens character with lashings of British wonk and tweed thrown in.
I remember the John Snow thing. Used to love that pub and was gutted to have boycott.
The central London ones used to be a nice escape from overpriced lager / stripped pine / harsh lighting/ twats (apart from the owner obvs)
Good summary!
Fascinating read. The Dynley Arms was one of my local pubs in the village where I lived in my teens, my Dad lived nearby until recently and last time I saw it was still shuttered up. Been closed since before Covid I think. It was always a bit of a throwback place and now I understand why.
Top article! Used to pop into the chandos early 2000s. Popular with theatre crowd. IIRC you could still get a pint then for under £2!
I stumbled across the one behind Carnaby St once and couldn’t get over the Tudor building and bargain prices.
That was a brilliant read, thanks. Here in Seattle we have the White Horse which is the single largest seller of Samuel Smith beers in North America. It’s cozy but also a bit of a throwback so in this context it all makes sense. Samuel Smith even put Joe & the White Horse on one of their labels a decade ago…
Fitzroy Tavern on Charlotte Street was a favourite of mine
