I cannot stress enough how great this is—he’s so deft and humane at picking apart the psychic and emotional traps our economic system sets for us. Rip graeber, gone too soon
In a similar vein, I can recommend this
Calls out several issues/developments that are doing my head in since the Mid-Nineties…
Killah, thanks for the rec my bro
Think reading that would raise my BP into the stratosphere, been my bugbear for decades in this country. We seemingly don’t (or allow) anything anymore for ‘joie de vivre’ unless it turns a profit. Don’t know if that’s what it’s about but you know…
I’ve blanked out ours teenage years from my memory, took a lot of red but worth it.
What’s this one? The link isn’t working
Apologies. Now fixed!
Actually, what he does is showing how the promise “you can make it if you want and try” that is championed by a lot of well educated liberals is not only a hollow one if you look closely but also
one of the main culprits of the anger and frustration which brought some Western countries towards populism.
I found the analysis very on point, the ideas for resolving it are not his forte imo.
I have no tips on teenager parenting, but ours laughs at it now, took a while though, hard times.
Good luck!
That cover gonna trigger the ellipsis haters and that typo on the spine
Interesting… mostly a salve for the conscience of the successful and entitled eh.
yeah, and really corroding to the idea of communities and the common good.
Hear hear*

I’ve just finished reading this and man could he do with an(other) editor. At one point he referenced the Urban Dictionary, which was odd. He also said he was served drinks in London by Damon Albarn, when Albarn would’ve been nine years old at the time.
I think Frantz comes across as nice but dim. Obviously this was his chance to get his opinion out there about David Bryne and what happened with Talking Heads, but I don’t know, apart from the bits about crediting him and Tina for songwriting, there’s no substance.
I don’t begrudge Frantz for it as he’s VERY obviously a family man who loves his wife ALOT, but you think he’d have some creative direction from somewhere. It’s sad to think, but it’s kind of hard to believe he was at the fulcrum of the band’s creative decision making when he puts out something like this.
Interesting to see I’m not the only one with readers block. I used to do most of my reading at work in the office during breaks, but now I’m WFH and can take a break anytime I like I’m not reading! What’s up with that?
Anyway planning to get back on it. Want to read Stephen Morris’ New Order book; see how it stacks up against Barney and Hookys. And gonna get The Terror since I got obsessed with the BBC series
Oh and The Secret DJ is definitely Tim Sheridan. I thought it was an open secret at this point. His writing style is very familiar. Not read it myself but have a feeling theres a lot of ‘embellishment’ going on
Ok so in a totally non disparaging way I just have to ask (and again I LOVED the books), was he ever a famous dj? I don’t pretend to know jack shit about the uk or Ibiza dance scenes in totality but I’m usually at least familiar with the names of the players. Never heard of the guy. No cap just facts as the kids say.
I’ve got both of Stephen Morris’ books as audio books. He’s got a very interesting take on the squabbles between Sumner and Hook, taking very much the middle ground. He doesn’t hold back on just how much flack Gillian got when she joined and throughout. I’m surprised she lasted at all!
Best thing about the audibooks is there is a ton of music in them, different mixes of old tracks, plus some of his own stuff which is very much in the New Order vein
Plus his impersonation of Rob Gretton is outstanding
Currently reading Underland by Robert Macfarlane which is so good that I’m dreaming about underground spaces! It has a chapter with Merlin Sheldrake which means that this has been purchased and is next on the pile.
