I’m no expert but has Thatcher’s transition to a services based economy led to this kind of pointless job on huge salaries? Meanwhile creating a whole low paid and disaffected underclass, flags, Farage etc. It is very depressing.

100% agree, I work in an IT related role (I’m not one of the clever ones!) at a hospital. We’re constantly under financial pressure as you’d expect, there’s currently a recruitment freeze… My line manager leaves at the end of the month with no plans for a replacement. All that said there’s a constant stream of personnel parachuted in without fanfare and not employed directly by the Trust. It’s not until you get an email from them that you’re aware of their existence. They seem to have no issues finding the money for them - facilitators, transition experts etc etc.
Of course they maybe ‘adding value’ what do I know?!??
Mags may have laid the groundwork for this but Labour under Blair and Brown loved a management consultant too.

The joys of the NHS and its capital vs revenue funding. Consultants etc come from a different budget, they don’t hit the bottom line in the same way.
Owing to a lack of ability to plan 3-4 years in advance for revenue funding we can’t do permanent staff but we can get in a consultant. The consultant then has no ownership over the delivery of their plans.
I am IT infrastructure manager within the NHS, every year we have to spend all of our capital funding on “stuff” with no additional funding to run the stuff for the next x years. This is the same with estates and other capital projects. In these days of cloud we want recurring funding year after year to operate services/people but it just ain’t there. Capital is use it or lose it, can we reassign it to patient care? sorry doesn’t work like that, wrong type of money.

yep. worked in various ‘media’ roles for 23 years and it was similarly all pointless bullshit. I went in pretty naive though whereas the kids now seem way more clued up
