Lee Perry Black Album

Loving this LP

Wasn’t impressed with the modular/orchestra fusion thing Floating Points was attempting, either. Could have been so much more.

But damn, didn’t know Pharaoh could still play like that.

Yeah he’s still got it and then some which makes this all the more frustrating for me. Check out that Tchicai With Strings it’s like a bizarro world version of the same idea where the programming and production is subordinate to his playing. One of the most inspiring jazz albums of the last decade easily.

The acoustic version of this is just fantastic

Will check it out this weekend, I’m feeling something calm and immersive for Sunday morning coffee.

I love it, listened to it twice in a row after getting it home. 180g is ace, lovely art and photos.
It holds back with loads of anticipation, then when the strings pick up in the 6th movement it’s a thing of beauty. Great stuff.

My most played purchase of the last year by far. A several hundred dollar discount for a copy in generic sleeves finally put this within reach. It would be nice if this were reissued as any record that anyone is willing to pay a thousand dollars for is clearly in demand. Everyone should be able to hear this. It’s so goddamn beautiful and the cut-down releases exclude some of the best performances.

I thought I knew what this group sounded like until I listened to this release and basically had my brain reshaped. The talent, intensity, speed, synergy, attitude…it’s overwhelming.

Yeah the stories of the engagement at the nickel are legend. I guess basically the guys were bored with their playing style and decided they were going to essentially rip up their playbook and move closer to a point of abstraction (all without talking to the notoriously sour Mr. Davis first). They got on stage and right away could tell that he was with it and got what they were on. Also a really rock solid refutation of the totally stupid idea that King Herbie Hancock is a ā€œsafeā€ keyboardist. All of these guys are full on crushing it but Herbie especially IMO is plugged in to higher forces in the universe on every single number.

I love the quote from Wayne Shorter (I think it might actually be from the album’s wiki entry) that when they got offstage they had gone so hard that they were ā€œLethargic in a princely way.ā€ We should all aspire to this every day.

Yeah, I’ve read interviews with the band where they talk about changing up their style, in part out of boredom, in part to fuck with Miles…but they talk about it in vague/cool insider-jazz language so I’ve never understood what they meant. When you put it in terms of pushing the music towards abstraction it makes more sense.

Was listening to ā€œThrustā€ over the weekend. No way in hell Herbie was a ā€˜safe’ keyboardist.

They wanted to to take the standards that they had BEYOND mastered and take them as far away from their origins as possible. When you think about it you’ve probably listened to the album version(s) of every one of these compositions a thousand times and not one is recognizable without the title sheet in front of you.

This, whilst sunbathing in the garden. In March!!
Marvelous.

I don’t usually want tapes but damn i want this tape
