What are you growing (AKA the secret life of plants)

Here in the UK the sun is sporadically peeping out through the clouds and we all need something to look forward to. There was a great gardening / horticulture chat on here a couple of years ago which would be great to revisit.

How are you making your space a green balearic garden / millennial Berlin apartment paradise?

I’m about to turn on my LEDs and plant some Asian and Italian basil (takes forever to grow from seed). I’ve got 3 different types of chili plants (habanero, espelette and Thai) that desperately need some photons too. I put them outside, but not sure they’re going to make it. Will try them under the LEDs. Other bits and bobs too I’m sure.

Been nursing this all winter. Kaffir lime that’s grown from seed. Planted 10, 2 germinated, 1 survived.

It grew quite strongly and has even managed a few shoots over winter. Can’t wait to get it out in the sun. I’ve debated getting it a grow light but not quite got round to it. Any recommendations, also for a heat mat?

It’s looking really healthy there. It’s obviously loving the perlite.

I don’t remember the make of my led. It was a cheap one from China. I ended up having to replace the electronics in it because the fan died. It’s now indestructible after being fixed by an expert (not me!). It got gutted.

I hid the leaves that have caterpillar holes in them on the other side

I mean how do you get caterpillars in December on the kitchen windowsill?

Amaryllis bulb, given to me by my cousin for Christmas. I just found a nice pot and put it in a warm spot. This is the slightly dull thing.

This is the bedroom project. Which might be more satisfying in the long term.

Couple of avocado plants struggling with this traumatic winter. Pruned them with optimism. Highly recommend the Wandering/Sailor/Jew as a plant - very hardy, beautiful and great as a hanger.

Had grand ideas to do loads of digging-over up the allotment this autumn / winter… Sorting new layout etc. Managed two days it’s been so bleeding wet.

Was quite chuffed at the sweetcorn last year I grew from seed. Also used to think there’s no point growing stuff you can’t eat but chucked in some flowers too as I got some free seeds and got more satisfaction than I ever imagined when they grew.

Itching to get going again… Took some cuttings from a monstera at home, early days as to whether they’ll take.

Just applied seaweed as a foliage spray. Not a bad thing for house plants and seedlings as light increases and growth picks up ( but by no means essential).
