There for work for a few weeks, maybe longer, staying near Vorgartanstrasse. Not going to have loads of time for flea market digging (not sure I’ve got it in me anymore tbh) so record shops, music bar maybe etc.

Touristy but the Belvedere really has an astonishing collection of work, and the cathedral is great, catacombs bit loads of skulls which disturbed me tbh 
If you like football then Rapid Wien is a good time, you can have a pint in the ground too.
Oh man, one of my favourite cities in the world. It’s gotten much more international, too. I will never forget being fifteen years old on a school trip and stumbling on the Rathaus (city hall) square where there were hundreds of people watching a televised performance of Richard Strauss’s bizarre and gruesome opera Salome. Ah, Vienna…
Locals will have tips, but we were last there three years ago and here are a few highlights. Buy a transit pass, it’s so easy to get around on the metro and streetcars. It’s become really more bikeable as well!
Kunsthistoriches Museum - if you love art, it’s unmissable. Among the highlights: Vermeer’s “Art of Painting” (if I recall correctly, they didn’t even lend it to the blockbuster Rijksmuseum show a few years back), and maybe my favourite painting of all time, Brueghel’s “Hunters in the Snow”
Cafes. Lots of great ones, but the classic ones (Central, Prückel) are tourist traps now. 15-year-old me felt that Landtmann was the height of sophistication, and as recently as 2008 you could order a pack of cigarettes for a glorious postprandial smoke. (as of 2023 they still sell cigs but no smoking indoors, sadly). Order a Wiener Melange which is a kind of capucchino they very properly serve with water.
Restaurants. A few faves included the Gmoakeller which I discovered by seeing where all the local musicians were going after concerts. Proper Viennese joint kind of hidden away. If you like wine, check out Heunisch & Erben, they have an amazing list and all kinds of really interesting natural wine as well.
And yes…swimming is lovely in the Neue Donau (New Danube) it’s a side channel. You can find some good spots on google, I forget exactly where we went.

Has a few meh record shops- Seven Star Records can be worth a mooch if you like 80s 12s by mullet haired European oddities at bargain prices - and let’s face it, who doesn’t ?
looks a bit chaotic in there but actually isn’t and records were in excellent condition when I was in 18 months back , and it was sub zero outside
Went there on a rare trip with my wife (no kids) and absolutely loved it. Gorged on art & design. Big slabs of cake and white wine spritzers in the cafes. Culture & history (Freud’s apartment). Ornate bars with big steiners of beer served by beefy guys in white shirts & bow ties. Some good vintage shops too if I recall.
Many thanks all. I think I’ll lean into old world culture in that case, that all sounds good to me. Im pretty sure I saw some Egon Schiele paintings and had some outrageously flamboyant coffees in magical cafés last time. Which was great.
