Weird seeing all these articles and think pieces by experts about what the democrats did wrong and how they didnt offer anything when beforehand it was all “too close to call” and how Trump might lose.
Seems that like football pundits, political analysts know as much as the rest of us and benefit greatly from hindsight.

I understand what you say but I don’t agree fully. Many were saying exactly that for quite a while. The worse thing that was being said, and went unheard, is that the Democratic party and the majority of its figureheads today have a very difficult time listening to other viewpoints and admitting they are wrong. They simply would not, did not and if all stays the same will not leave the echo chamber. The same goes for the majority of the left worldwide, it seems.

There has been loads of analysis that called it right for over 2 years, the Democrats ran a terrible campaign despite spending record amounts of $. The people on the ground putting in the work have been badly let down.

Fair enough. Admittedly i (intenionally) havent been across all the coverage of it so it seemed like theres been a lot of “well i told you so” in the last 48 hours.
Alot of what i had read seemed to suggest it could go either way, or the leader in polls varied depending on the source.
A lot of people said the quiet part about the US out very loud this week. I’ve lived here over 50 years and really never thought I’d see such an ugly expression of racism and sexism, general idiocy and complete forgetfulness about very recent history as we’ve just seen. It’s a truism that people vote their emotions, not their thoughts. So what the fuck do these election results - not just the presidency, almost the whole damn show - say about the real underlying truths of this country?

Sorry, but the New York Times lost all credibility over two decades ago when they got enthusiastic over invading Iraq for non-existent “weapons of mass destruction.”
Utterly depressing to hear that, just a couple of days after winning the election Trump supporters are sending targeted, racist emails out to 1000’s of people

It’s an opinion column, which is different than the examples you cite.
Having said that, I find no big media group to be perfect, but I also prefer to believe that they have learned from that mistake and taken in average are still trusted media sources. Distrust in journalism is another victory for Trump and his cronies. They love it that people on both extremes buy into wild conspiracy theories and champion small “independent” news sources.
I still believe in the aggregate, and still believe there are decent journalists out there, especially in the papers with the most reach… Call me dumb…

Well, yes, I know all that. I’ve been in various forms of the media and publishing business most of my life. It’s true that I developed a particular distrust and dislike of the New York Times back then but it’s been reinforced since then so many times for so many reasons I’ve lost count. As far as I’m concerned, the NYT is a large, mainstream, capitalist organization with a vastly inflated opinion of itself. Of course, I would not wish you think I’ve gone all Trumpy on you, but just as the Democratic Party has supposedly lost connection with its former supporters due to some sort of entrenched arrogance I’m of the opinion that the NYT has suffered the same fate. True, I’m West Coast countercultural and generally have little time for East Coast institutions and their associated elitism. As far as the NYT is concerned that is unfortunate because there’s precious little journalism left anywhere in the US and good journalism demands resources and financial backing. Honestly, I think it’s just another propaganda organization for the establishment, or Establishment if you prefer. At this time, I’d say the same thing about many, if not all, mainstream papers along with other forms of media outlets. Let’s face it, It takes a lot of money and resources to stay on top in that game and the masters must be paid.
Which sort of leads to what’s being muttered in the corners. People are really fed up with the powers that be. Incumbents all around the world are being kicked out even at the expense of getting monsters like Trump. Nobody is really claiming this is a logical or intellectual exercise. It’s emotional knee-jerkism and damn the results.
PS I refuse to call you “dumb.” I share much of your idealism in theory. I have little trust in minor “independent” publications. I hate to hand Trump anything even approaching a victory. Personally, I think he should have been arrested on January 21, 2021 and I wanted famed prosecutor Kamala Harris to say “I will lock him up.” But in the postmortem or autopsy currently being performed it makes sense to let go of old concepts. It’s a new game now.

It’s becoming more and more prevalent as well.
I work in education, and there is a big annual conference where people get together, talk about what is happening in the world of higher ed, and then do some business on the side. Usually its pretty dull stuff but the expo hall is fun to walk around. Every country has a pavilion and they’re busy without being overly busy. This year the news of the visa pause was on the morning of day 1 and it changed the whole outlook of the conference. But what was really interesting was that on day 2 the expo hall had been reconfigured. Ireland, Scotland and Australia doubled the sizes of their booths and pavilions and you couldn’t get an appointment to speak to anyone for love nor money. I spoke to the head of the Australia pavilion and she said that they estimated the amount of business that would usually have gone the US’ way and was suddenly heading their way was in the region of $1bn. That’s an incredible own goal from this administration. It’s a very frustrating time.
