Politics more than ever seems to just be a popularity contest. Starmer just doesnt seem to have a voice. He’s so dreary and banal. Its no wonder replacement whispers are starting. Andy Burnham has been touted by some, now that I would love to see

A couple of years ago we were on holiday in Ibiza, staying in a small hotel just off Salinas beach. Nice place - run by a couple of bohemian women. Aura cleaning available on request etc. One evening, my wife and I came off the beach after a day of chilling at Sa Trinxa, when we realised there was now quite the crowd gathered back at the hotel. Proper grizzled old hippy types, skin like leather after 50 years loafing around Ibiza in the nud.
Highly intrigued, we took a seat - were these the OGs? Was this some kind of Happening? Were they going to start doling out mescaline or spraying the fabled Coco Loco down our necks? They’d all seemed to have brought boxes of fruit from their gardens at least. I then clocked that a small stage had been erected and a very straight looking bloke in a suit was about to start talking. It transpired that he was a cardiologist from England, and he was here to talk to us about why the Covid vaccine was A Very Bad Thing. It’s probably the only time in Ibiza I’ve watched a guy in a suit talk through a PowerPoint pack. (Narrator: there was no Coco Loco).
The hippies seemed to be lapping it up anyway, and I just wrote the whole thing off as deeply odd and forgot about it. Until the same bloke turned up at the Reform conference the other week with his PowerPoint. It’s a very strange time that we live in. Some of the fringe stuff you hear some Reform characters go on about - 15 Minute Cities, WEF, chemtrails etc - you very rarely encounter it in the wild. But I do remember frequenting an Ibiza Facebook group where the bohemians would post photos of ‘chemtrails’ with alarming frequency.
Not sure where I’m going with this post other than the question…is Richard Tice actually deeply Balearic?

In my honest opinion it’s just the other side of this connecting technology. It’s kind of like how the invention of airplanes was also the invention of the plane crash. The good side is what we’re all doing here, connecting with each other from around the globe with very little need for moderation. Early social media/internet had that too. Now that quite a lot of people get their info from social media there are no gatekeepers and fringe ideas disseminate virally; bad actors who profit from disinformation are enabled by the algorithms. My brother is on TikTok 24/7 and it just feeds him bosh. He went from being an inquisitive stoner to someone what we can hardly reason with - it’s like he’s on another planet.

cameron’s hot take: the CK thing was an easy excuse to take kimmel off the air, which they wanted to do as soon as CBS announced the cancellation of colbert.
big business is all the same now - there’s no such thing as competition, there’s only what you can get away with. cancelling colbert really was a cost-cutting move, in the last few decades it’s all about maximizing profit, and high-profile names and celebrities and bands are expensive and the show format is outdated. the networks could probably put infomercials on during those hours (and make money rather than spend money) and ratings wouldn’t drop too dramatically. americans have yet to get tired of reality shows and those are uber cheap to produce, so anything that requires talent (especially writers) is on the chopping block. besides, people are looking at their phones in bed, nobody really cares what’s on tv anymore.
the CK thing wasn’t even egregious - but trump and co. were going to whine anyway, so might as well placate him AND save a shitload of money. i predict they kill the whole show and the whole format. all the networks will.

I agree on the basis that they don’t care. I disagree that a show thst cost them 40 million a year was a financial drain. They take losses that big on single movies that don’t do well in box offices, a lot of times.
It’s dire either way. And it will end up biting them in the ass, I hope.

And if Labour stopped talking about ‘the tax burden’ and returned general taxation - upwards - to somewhere they were around the time of that notorious socialist Margaret Thatcher - then that would certainly help.

As an outsider looking in, Keir Starmer seems like he’s abandoned all Labour principles and policies to be Tory-ish while amplifying the mob by cracking down on free speech from one direction only. Him and Trump seem like odd bed fellows and the sooner we get rid of both, the better.
