in a piece of music that get you every time. From the simple introduction of a hi-hat to the subtle change in groove. I am digitising the last part of my record collection, my beloved 45’s, and a couple of these little moments got me thinking.

The simple little addition of the riff at the end of the bar at 2:24
The minor chords (?) coming in at 3:10 always does something to me - changes the emotional register of the track completely - plus the bit at 5:05 when the singer says ‘shall I do it again’ and he keeps it in
Maybe an obvious one but the one that jumps to mind
Around 2:20-2:28 when they switch the timing of the last line. They do it again later but this first time always feels like they fucked up and pulls my attention to it. I don’t know anything about music theory, but it makes the song so much better and memorable imo
For some reason the second one that comes to mind is this
Around 0:30 when the bass begins snaking its way up and down, the rhythm of which feels odd but also perfect, and then the timing of the vocal samples. It’s like a massage for the brain.
am a real sucker for strings that come in about 2/3 of way through and take it to another level
eg Radiohead - Reckoner or Psychemagik - Valley of Paradise (would love to know what Crosby made of it), or the equally beautiful prins thomas remix of kaspar bjorke’s heaven
*as a layman in these things, can any producers on here explain what that is called (if there is a technical term?) or if you were looking for similar, what would your search term be? for music where an orchestral/string element is used to dramatic effect?
I’ve always loved this track, and the main reason why is that at 2:53 a little 909 rimshot riff comes in that elevates it so much that it’s a lesson on how details can make good into great.
I vividly remember hearing Carl Craig’s remix of Relevee for the first time (pretty certain it was an Optimo NYE night at the Fruitmarket). The strings… and then it kicks back in CC does it again.
Another big CC fave of mine that has many little moments. Used to play this one out a lot and sounds epic on a good system.
Obviously we’re not going to need to talk about this, or the little pivot at 7:20 that Paperclip People samples, where the whole thing turns from an epic into… an odyssey (what’s bigger than an epic)?
