The Social Media Dilemma

Fuck - thats awful to read but sadly really unsurprising… Jeez. Though tbh I feel like we reached that point anyway…

Been pretty much social media free now since start of December after switching phones and deciding not to log back into Instagram on my new phone.

I will still occasionally log in for a look maybe once a week for 10-15 mins or so, but this means I have to fire up the old phone to do so.

I did have a bit of fomo for the first few weeks, and found myself wondering if cutting it out was actually less beneficial that engaging with it. But having had a good 8 weeks of this now I can definitely say that it’s noticeably helped focus and productivity, lowered anxiety and stress and improved general mood

Note that having this forum has played a significant part of forgetting about Instagram.

Today JD Vance was a “suggested friend” on Instagram. Enough. We can all see what is going on here. IG account will be nuked tomorrow. Amazon account going at the end of the month. We lived and thrived without these cunts before they came along and “disrupted” our lives, so I’m out.

This forum is the closet I get to social media. Fuck them. Had to ditch my dummy phone and return to a smartphone recently cos w/o maps, parking apps, QR codes and WhatsApp I couldn’t fully function in the real world. Sad. I hope we don’t regret in future ceding so much control to these people and devices. This forum is an island of good will, empathy, fun and great taste - thanks all x

about to kill off instagram which will get me off of all meta platforms.

sucks, because there’s really no replacement for it if you’re a record collector. i love browsing stores new used arrivals via IG, seeing people promote their new releases, hell just seeing folks bonzing their rarities. maybe they were all doing it on tiktok too, but i was never on that, so i’ll never know what i missed.

i know folks are scrambling to make a replacement, i just hope all the old record heads make the move.

Sad that you feel you have to with all that benefit. Do costs now outweigh those benefits for you? I’ve not used IG (just FB/Twi) so no knowledge of the environment, good or bad.

Get rid of them all. A big improvement in wellbeing. I also understand that this is harder for others due to work related stuff. But… fuck them.

I don’t think you should leave, sad if you do as your music posts on instagram are a great resource and always from the heart.

Anyway about to post some finds on here…today was a good day !

Definitely leaving but I’m hopeful something similar will come along without the association with Meta etc. Looking forward to seeing your finds :+1:

I had to delete Instagram from my phone last week. It’s a shame because my social media journey was basically Fotolog → Flickr → Insta. I only followed people whose images I liked, hardly anyone I knew and no-one who posted selfies or pictures of their dinner. No politics, no self-promotion, no bullshit. And it was motivation for my own image-making (an obsession since my first point & shoot camera).
But lately I kept finding myself lying in bed at 6am, phone hand going numb, just scrolling through miles of memes / ‘content’, all absolute brain rot.
Maybe I’ll go back but it will have to be with discipline.
