Watched Asteroid City on Saturday night and was very disappointed. I like Wes Anderson but this felt like he’s stretched his shtick to breaking point. A wonderful cast and the usual amazing colours, sets and camera shots but wasted in a pretentious and confusing ‘story’. Style over substance sadly
Yeah. He’s out ‘Wes Anderson’d’ himself.
Pastel Colour Palette? Check
Symmetry? Check
Usual suspects? Check
Indeedy, was like an AI WA movie, proper over him now.
Me too tbh. Shame really.
I’ve not really enjoyed a Wes Anderson film since Fantastic Mr Fox
Quite a nice one as well. Used to drive from Plymouth to the Exeter PH to see films that were just never shown in the local Vue multiplex (Plymouth was a real Vin Diesel-Fast And The Furious type of city).
Saw All Of Us Strangers on Sunday evening. That, ending, wow. A real gut punch.
Royal Tennenbaums. After that he didn’t do anything for me really.
Finally got ’round to seeing “May December” yesterday. A curious and beguiling film about some extraordinary people that’s rolling ’round in my mind today.
Well worth a gander if people haven’t seen it yet.
Zone of Interest was quite a film. Very well worth seeing in the cinema free of distractions. We went for a matinee showing which is ideal, I think–leave the rest of the day to ponder it. It builds and builds and it’s hard to think of anything else for the next few days. This is how you do a film about the Holocaust - free of sentimentality & cliche. Because really what else is there to say?
Under the Skin stayed with me for weeks. I can’t imagine what this will do to me
Re Wes Anderson… I’ve not been crazy about anything but I did really enjoy the four Roald Dahl shorts on Netflix… Those stories really suited his style.
The last five minutes have really stayed with me
Saw the Zone of Interest last night. It’s a stunning piece of art although I’d hesitate to call it enjoyable. Actually felt a bit physically uncomfortable watching it - I’ve never seen a movie that uses sound like that before.
Really impressive stuff.
Yeah, well put. There was something rather off-kilter about walking into a multiplex cinema where adjacent theatres were showing the latest confected entertainment or whatever and putting yourself through that. Apparently much of Mica Levi’s score was jettisoned save for the bits at the beginning/end and the few ‘punctuation’ sounds that were so effective.
On a side note, the novel is worth reading, but it’s quite a different beast than the film. It consists of three distinct voices–the commandant, another camp officer, and a Jewish worker in the camp. Glazer seems to have used the novel as a starting point and focusing on only one of the voices and I think it worked. I had given up on Martin Amis in the 2000s but Zone of Interest is worth a read.
It didn’t stop the couple behind me nailing an enormous punnet of popcorn.
Second viewing of All of Us Strangers and I’m going to stick my neck out and say this is the best British film in two decades.
Also the phoenix arts centre has a little cinema too so that’s worth keeping an eye on-
Went to Zone Of Interest yesterday. After hearing so much about it I was still shocked by the film making. Incredible.
