Yeah, heard that news a few weeks back. Everything’s up in the air atm.
Its liberating!!
(& nothing to do with selling tickets)
All very odd.
I was there for that summer and staying with Claire’s sister Lois. Awkward watching from the side with her but I don’t think Mike got it up once lol
The split in the camp with Mike /Clare and Andy! Dawn that year is what really finished Manumission… I know it went on for a few years later but it was like walking into a shopping centre on Christmas eve the last few times I went…
Only ever went to Manumission in Ibiza once in 1995. It was before the sex shows etc but the trashiness was already there. The year before were were at Black & White at Ku. Just a bit better…
The sex show was 1996. I remember flame Girl from Amsterdam came down either 95 or 96, she was a professional performer who would during her show could manage to stick her hand up her Ass… The crowd loved it
She’d do well on Britain’s Got Talent.
I mean, in the cold light of day, many years later, you have to wonder how the f*** that was considered something that was part of the Ibizan experience? Or any house music/club experience ?
Madness.
The Chisel Years.
End of @howler ’s Golden Era for sure.
if can afford it will try and make it over to a Harvey (+ Malanga or Beat Hotel) but will see how the summer pans out. Musicwise, there is virtually nothing else that wouldn’t make you want to commit hara kiri.
I was thinking this earlier. It’s easy to forget how mainstream and naff “clubbing” was becoming by the mid 90s. Even at the underground end of it the “Balearic network” was basically a House version of the Chris Hill soul mafia. Add in the over commercialisation and growing cheesiness of the overground House scene (alcopops, fluffy bra, handbag, Jeremy fucking Healy, Ministry CDs, M People, Prog House landfill, corporate Ibiza etc) and the bland Strictly Rhythm-snore fests of a lot of US House focused nights … so much of the scene felt really quite dated and crap to me by the late 90s. Disco saved me.
I got so bored, I fucked off to NZ for a couple of years . Was a pretty good time to be there, tbh, '96 & '97. Everything still felt fairly fresh and there were some decent smaller clubs in Auckland.
Happiness Stans, Indulge, Come Dancing, Heavenly Social parties at Turnmills, early UK Garage nights at The Chunnel … all my favourite nights in London during the mid to late 90s … all got a bit bugle and big beat at times though
Sorry this thread has veered well off topic
Happiness Stans - was that in that ramshackle place in Farringdon? Can’t remember the name. Lots of small rooms and stairs and always a good vibe
Yep! Brilliant fun … different rooms, loads of disco and funk, quite retro I suppose, and a long way away from the commercial House scene (as I saw it at the time).
The venue was Smithfield’s.
Yes had some great nights in there!
A piece in the evening standard about Alfredo
Five clubs in one!
Very true. By the time I moved to London (from Brighton) in 98 I mainly went out to our own small parties playing reggae, hip hop, some house, eclectic/balearic bits and increasingly disco/edits. Very few memories of going to actual London clubs by then.
