The real question is “but what are you running from??”
Good luck to you though mate. I’m a walker and don’t feel complete if I haven’t done a couple of hours walking in a day. Weirdly I did get the urge to break into a jog last week but managed to suppress it.
Also worth looking at Green Lip Mussel extract*. Very good for joints and cartilage. I take one every morning (along with 2g creatine, Omega 3-6-9, functional shroom gummies and turmeric).
*An ex-gf’s dad owned a company in NZ that was one of the first to produce it - product was/is called Seatone. He made millions and then sold the company and made further millions. My dear, departed nan used to swear by the stuff bitd- this would have been mid-90s. Cleared her arthritis up almost completely.
Do you have a recommendation for the Green Lip Mussel extract? I used to run 5k most mornings then a 10k on a sunday, did this for years but started getting injured a lot (have had cartilage removed a few times) and moved to spinning instead but I do miss the open air. It definitely gets addictive - used to love my Sunday morning 10k, headphones on and off I went. Good excuse to buy some kit as well
I’m trying the creatine to combat the muscle pain and general fogggy’ness and listlessness I’ve got since the Dr put me on statin’s, had to swap from first one as it was awful.
Seeing what happens at 6 month mark to my cholesterol, if it’s not improved think I might ditch them.
As someone wiser than me said, it’s shit getting old.
As someone who never really took medicine for most of my life (outside of the occasional antibiotic or whatever necessitated by illness) it’s been odd getting on statins. No side effects for me, but I have a relatively low dose. Instant drop in “bad” cholesterol. My understanding is that there are many kinds and it’s easy/advisable to change if there are side effects. They are some of the most tested and safe medications out there, we have a doctor friend who thinks they should just put them in the water supply–lol.
Sounds like you’ve gone beyond it already but if anyone is starting from scratch the couch to 5k app is great way to steadily build up. As someone who’s body is completely unsuited to running, it helped me get round the final legs of a few triathlons.
I used to be really into it ( fast 10km every other day in lockdown at peak / few half marathons) but have lost enthusiasm to go since a bit of health long covid ( would have trainers on & find an excuse not to go)
Doing Parkrun to get myself back into it & really enjoying & recommend
(I used to think not worth putting on my trainers to travel to do 5km)
Having lots of runners & trainers really helps with the speed edge
I echo @Apiento on build up slow & also dont go to often, when I first got bug I was every day & shin splints are a pain in the shinn & a half
I’m with you, Paul - I’ve tried running but outside of the occasional 10K it’s just too rough on my knees even with proper shoes. We did a 10-miler during covid and I was sore for days. Cycling and swimming for me…
I’ve found I that I actually prefer running/training to podcasts rather than music. With music, my pace would be all over the shop. depending on what was playing, whereas with with a podcast (current choice is The Rest Is Classified), I just seem to settle into my my natural pace (which currently 5m25/km) and it all feels nice and easy.
I hear you re, shin splints- definitely don’t want those. Going to book in for a gait analysis and invest in some decent trainers next week as currently running in a pair of Dunlop Green Flash*
Managed 7.25km in 40mins today and could’ve carried on, but am taking the advice and not pushing it too much.
I’d reccomend looking into Adizero evo sl theres also an all terrain version if running trails is your thing. I’ve tried and tested many running shoes over the years and these have been the absolute best value for money and longest lasting shoes I’ve owned.
I used to love running but after having both knees replaced in my early 50s (consultant couldn’t figure out why they were so fucked) running is off the cards.
Got a belly that I can’t shift…try to get to the gym 2/3 times a week, try to get in 10000 steps a day, count my calories - still look 4 months pregnant.
Is liposuction expensive?
Try cutting down on the carbs. I havnt eaten carbs for over two weeks and lost 5kg and my belly within the first week. Totally sorted my IBS out too. Only eating two meals a day now as just not hungry, so no more snacking between meals.
Can I ask what you are eating for your meals? Honestly overeating and diet is just one thing I can’t seem to get under control and since quitting smoking 6 months ago I’ve put like a stone on even though I’m running and cycling a lot more. I really can not go a day without carb temptation ha
Sure! I had a head start as my partner is pretty much on the same diet. Breakfast for the first week whilst I was adjusting was celery/apple and peanut butter first thing in the morning. But now I’m not eating til 10/11 and it will be tinned fish, grated carrot, olives, sun dried tomatoes, salad, chick peas. (Super quick). That will last me til dinner time- whatever meat you like and roasted veg. Curry’s and dahls with true spinach instead of rice. Just replace the carbs with salads or beans - easy!
after the first few days did feel abit dizzy and tired but that soon passed
Thank you very much I have a lot of planning to do and spending time figuring out what works for me but will definitely incorporate some of this! How much peanut butter at breakfast just a spoonful or two?
It’s pretty much all about what you eat I think, exercise helps but I found tracking what I ate was key, and stick what you are about to eat in an app before you eat ft, often I would just think it’s not worth the calories
I have the same meal pretty much every day for either lunch or tea - chicken breast, black beans and broccoli. I make 4 at a time so I’ve always got something in the fridge.
