Boardwalk at Scheveningen beach.
This is about 200 yards from where weโre staying ![]()
I canโt recommend the Mesdag Panorama highly enough. Situated in the centre of Den Haag, it is a colossul 360degree painting of Sheveningen beach painted in the late 19th century. You enter from below into this massive immersive chamber โ and the painting completely surrounds you.
You stand on a platfrom, about as big as a bandstand with a wooden rail around it and then sand and then sand and tufts of grass, an old clog and drifwood lline the floor to the edge of the painting.
It looks both like a painting and strangely real at the same time. You see down the beach, and the north sea, and a troop of cavalry officers cantering towards you. Move around and you see Scheveningen itself, just a village then, and then the church spires of Den Haag over in the distance. Look closely and you can see a steam train in the middle distance, almost as if modernity is just about to arrive.
Itโs wonderful, your 6-year-old will be enchanted.

3345 records was pretty decent a couple of years back when I was last in town. Nice city for a wander.
