For a non Bass player I seem to have three. A Fender Precision, an Epiphone Jack Casady and a Squier Bass VI.
The Precision is really the industry standard, sits well in the mix because it’s more mid-range than pure bottom end, the Jack Casady does that semi-hollow ‘thump’ (particularly with flat wounds on) and the Bass VI does gloomy Eighties Cure/New Order brilliantly, even moreso when using a bit of chorus.
My favorite electric bass sound is the Gibson EB-3, preferrably with flatwound strings through an overdriven amp. Necessarily an original 60’s EB-3 because the pickups in the modern ones are wired differently. It’s just the fattest sound there is. It’s not for everyone, it doesn’t work for everything, but damn if it isn’t an all enveloping sound.
I have others I love, but this is the one I love the most.
