RnB was one of the sounds of my high school years–all the mainstream stuff but also D’Angelo, Maxwell etc–the chill room at parties would be playing stuff like Spottieottiedopalicious through a haze of weed.
I think it was sometime around 2010 when the Weeknd trilogy albums were coming out that I really got back into RnB in all its modern incarnations. Always on the lookout for newish stuff, here are a few that I’ve been digging.
ooohhhhh nice thread. I don’t have much to contribute from the last 10yrs of RnB- although I do like how a lot of modern RnB (similar with Dancehall) grabs whatever it likes from the ether and warps and bends the forms to its own purpose.
This is getting banged on a couple commercial radio stations here in Berlin, (which is not so bad, Amerie 1thing and Usher Good Kisser were both pretty big pop tunes but also both super dope in their own right)
Moving towards Latin X meets Raggaton Pop (i just made this up now i have no idea about this area of music) but very RnB informed
admittedly i’m not bang up to date on modern r&b - that’s more my wife’s area of expertise. however, i feel like i need to evangelize amerie’s weird 4AM eps that came and went without a trace of interest. she had a great voice and from what i understand, she wrote and produced em’ herself.
