So i been really into music from South America lately. Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, etc. I love different genres and sounds from especially Brazil but when i listened to this record it struck a chord with me. https://www.discogs.com/release/4235000-Nando-Carneiro-Violão
It was like “thats the sound”. Technical but simple. Not ambient but ambient atmosphere. Jazz inspired but not jazz. Its hard to describe.
I wondered if there was any connoisseurs of this particular style at this excellent forum. Hit me up with suggestions. Anything goes
Here are some other records kind of similar i been digging.
You’ll like this one, although it’s not actually South American - it was recorded in Germany with mostly German musicians - but it’s heavily inspired by Brazilian music.
This is also nice and actually is Brazilian. Mr Bongo found some deadstock of this a few years ago but I couldn’t justify the £200 they priced it at. Has since been reissued as well.
Yeah, definitely. Lo Borges and Milton Nascimento have some stuff in a similar vein as well for the “sound” im searching for
Havent checked out Mutantes though.
Slightly different wheelhouse but I love this LP which I think fits the ambient not ambient experimental by a couple of Mexican musicians, trying to somehow blend the ancient and traditional with the modern. Weirdo electronic explorations.
I’m so happy to find this thread! I’ve seeking this exact record description for the past few years as well. Altas Planicies was the gateway and is def a top 5 for me. I have a few others to share…
First, this comp from Alejandro Cohen and Bárbara Salazar (dublab) Viento Sur is a retrospective of ambient/folk/jazz from the Melopea label in B.A. Big favorite for me.
This comp - America Invertida - also from Vampi Soul is full of this style of jams as well.
And yet another set of Vampi Soul reissues from Sebastiao Tapajos & Pedro Dos Santos. There is a Vol 1 and a Vol 2 which are both totally beautiful.
Silvia Iriondo LP is a little hit or miss but the hits hit…
Alfombra Magica hits these notes as well… Self-Titled is amazing but Vol II is maybe a little more in this zone. Pequeño y Primitivo is an all-timer for me.
Viejas Raices veers into jazz fusion but there are more spaced out ambient tracks that are heavy and beautiful - Eterna Presencia is another constant listen for me. There was a nicely done reissue in the past couple of years.
Hope this helps! I have some rips, lmk if you need
