Sounds of THE D, Golden Lion Todmorden Fri 28 Nov

On Friday 28th November, I’ll be at the legendary Golden Lion in Todmorden for a night dedicated to the sounds of Detroit. The party runs from 8pm to 1am. At 8:30 there will be a screening of Black to Techno — the acclaimed short film by Grammy-winning director Jenn Nkiru. After that, I’ll be on the decks all night, playing house, techno, electro, beatdown, and ghettotech straight from Detroit.

Free tickets via RA.co (tickets essential for film): https://ra.co/events/2269321

7 Detroit basslines in 90seconds… how many can you ID?

Another little IDing quiz if anyone likes that sort of thing? Seven Detroit riffs, motifs and melodies in 2 minutes:

It sounds like The Golden Lion is having some struggles with noise complaints from residents. The text below is from Sean Johnston’s Insta page. If you’ve been lucky enough to experience it’s magic like me then it might be worth a message of support and appreciation to the two contacts at Calderdale Metrolpolitan Borough Council.

'Wakka and Gig need our help.

If The Golden Lion means something to you, take a couple of minutes to write a short email in your own words to:

The venue is under pressure from ongoing, and questionable noise complaints. Now is the moment to speak up.

Keep it simple and personal:

  • Why the Lion matters to you
  • The sense of safety and inclusion
  • Its role in the community and local economy
  • Why it should be supported, not pushed out

Even a few honest lines makes a difference.’

I’m not on Fb but I heard that they were having problems with this. What a shot in the foot this seems by the council/powers-that-be. I can’t think of a more positive, community-minded bunch than Gig and Wacka. Hope it gets resolved presto-pronto!
