Brian Jacks was from round our way and ran a youth disco called BJ’s. #truestory
Sounds a bit suspect!
100 dips in a minute!
Sounds like me with a big bag of whizz at Glastonbury 1990
Getting over a nasty chest infection at the moment. I needed provisions the other night so wandered over to the local Sainsburys for a few essentials.
Walked back. Got in the lift. Arrived at my floor. Lift door opened. Woman standing there says “are you my plumber?” I laughed and said “no sorry”.
Maureen Lipman.
We’re neighbours. Had a few conversations with her since. She’s lovely.
A few corrie stars live in my block I think. I know Jamie Lomas from hollyoaks does / did. I’ve also seen Dev from corrie fingering the gypsy creams in Coop, and I’ve been behind Audrey Roberts at the till before.
It hasn’t changed me though.
Mum and her mate were in Central London a few years back. They were sat in a cafe chatting and a black limo circled past a few times. It eventually stopped and out popped Liza Minnelli and her bodyguard.
Liza wanders inside and my mum asks the bodyguard what kind of mood she’s in. “Why don’t you find out for yourself” he says. With that they both join my mum and her mate for a coffee and a catch up (as you do). Liza signed mum’s napkin, gave her a hug, and off they went.
L for Liza; L for legend.
Fingering the gypsy creams in coop
Went to see Moodymann at Cutloose’s 2nd birthday when it was the Roadhouse in 2010.
He was nothing short of brilliant playing right across the board everything from hip hop to led zeppelin to the deepest Detroit techno.
Constantly on the microphone, interacting with the crowd, taking music to play from punters, ordering drinks over the PA - never seen anything like it, and probably never will again.
Anyway, fast forward to 2017 and my daughters playing Passionfruit by Drake quite loudly. All of a sudden the music stops and Moodymans voice comes on, ‘hold on fuck that, fuck that shit,…’ then load of crowd noise, cheering and the like.
Its from 36s to 59s:
Iits from the cutloose night (which is still on mixcloud in 4 parts.)
How the fuck did Drake or his team come across a recording of a small club night (400 people maybe) in Manchester and then decide to sample a part?
Anyway, its a loose small claim, but inadvertently I probably performed backing vocals on Darke’s world wide hit.
Still waiting for the royalty cheque though.
Someone else sampled that Moodymann speech a few years ago.
Can’t remember who it was by or what it was called though. A German fella I think?
This motherfucker wants to hear some Chic
I was there that night. I was seeing someone who worked with one of the promoters at the time.
We may have rubbed shoulders.
I managed to nab the recording off someone, somehow. Think I’ve got the Recloose set knocking about somewhere. That was too.
Edit: Recloose set was from Eyes Down.
Yes!!
That was another part of it. It literally went on all thru his set all night.
An ex friend of mine was part of the Cutlloose lot and he stayed behind for a drink with MM after the club closed.
He said MM was hilarious.
Cutloose was a great night and sorely missed…
It was so good, my ideal club, basement, 400 people, incredible djs regularly. Very little ego / attitude, everyone there to dance!
Do you remember the little art gallery / loft space that they started to use - down an alley off Stevenson Sq?
No cloakrooms, coats chucked on a chair type place.
Youre bang on about no ego, purely done for the love of music not money.
Was it called Krak / crack? Gallery? It was a great little venue, think I saw Mark Seven there once and Beautiful Swimmers another time.
Yes, it was called Kraak. It was a great venue.
Look at the guests they had at Cutloose, just brilliant:
Oliver $
(I really liked it, but seemed to be in minority though)
Paul and Wes absolutely nailed it for a long while with Cutloose, then Wildfire (briefly). Think it was Lexx at that loft space?
Idjuts, Paul Murphy and Mark all great nights with many a sore head and legs afterwards.
