Didn’t Pete Herbert work there?

I believe so, I never met him though

Yeah Pete ran it for ages. They did some great comps over the years.

Guaranteed something great on every visit to Atlas. I developed a powerful Fretless azm habit due to that shop.

Golden Disc on Queens Road in Southend.

It is the record shop in the video for Every Day is Like Sunday by Morrissey. But that’s not what made it good. It was a great shop, cheapest prices in town and a hub of subcultural activity.

Shout out to Gumbi’s too in York Road market. Bootlegs under the counter.

when did Ray’s Jazz shop close?
I worked across the road circa 2010

A year or so after that? It still half exists in Foyles but it’s not really comparable.

Finally made the foray to Diskery in Birmingham yesterday, packed lunch required.

This proved very disapointing on a diversion to drop in, one of the turn straight around jobs.

Next to nothing in 12 down there, but didn’t look at the 7’s. Well done if you found some gold.

Yeah, that’s fair. Way too little time to root about in the sevens properly, reminded me a bit of the old Beatin’ Rhythm set up.

I always got mind eraser walking in there and being confronted by the wall of 7”s. It was overwhelming.

Sorting old 7s by major labels is sociopathic behaviour

This strikes me as being the sort of “old rock fan with a stall at a record fair” approach that has a “soul/dance/rap” section comprised of a knackered £20 copy of Rappers Delight, some early 00s Positiva singles, a completely out of place obscure US house import 12" in mint condition, the entire Galaxy/Phil Fearon back cat on promo and a House Of Pain single that isn’t Jump Around. Maybe something on Tidy Trax with mould on the cover.

How much was the Tidy Trax 12 & what was condition

Not been to a fair in a while but I know these boxes. Probably an old vinyl coated carry case. Likely on the floor as it doesn’t warrant table space. You know it’s going to be crap, but in desperation you steel yourself and take a look. You recoil in horror at the pitiful offerings, embarrassed by the contents. Realising the same box of chud has been carted round the same fairs for the last six years at least.
You retreat. Chastened, lesson learned. Until the next time.

Anyone been, sounds interesting, although drinking and record buying sounds painful wallet wise?

I tried to go on Tuesday after work but found it closes at 6 which seemed a bit silly. Will try again another day

Fond memories of Vinyl Addiction in Camden in the late 90s. They had the bar upstairs (Bar Vinyl i think?) + record shop downstairs. Used to enjoy having a couple of pints after i had made my purchases.

Yes Bar Vinyl, I worked there in the late 90s, behind the bar and behind the decks! Would get lively on the weekends, good times.
