I love this record! Other than the male tenor choir (something that seems to recur in popular Brazilian music a lot, I’ve noticed?), it’s as much West Coast/U.S.-style funk/fusion record as it is a Brazilian one, but I love it all the same!

There’s so much classic Brasilian music, most of it fairly well documented. What constantly amazes me though is the modern stuff that is equally as good in its own way but doesn’t seem to get the global publicity, I really wish I could devote more time to researching the fresh releases. Here’s a few I’ve picked up over the last year or so (Text copied from my blog):

There is something magical about the best Brazilian music and @dominuslancelius has always been a conduit between the country’s greats & the best contemporary sounds of this most musical of lands. From his new Portuguese home he ploughs a largely sweet furrow with brief swerves into 21st century microdosed Tropicalia for @bananaandlouierecord. It’s a start to finish joy sure to brighten up any day.

If you’re looking for some Autumnal sunshine then head straight to the new @luedjiluna LP, as she further explores AfroBrazilian music from it’s heartland in Bahia as well as via a time in Kenya. Bolstered by extra instrumentation & wonderful arrangements, she strays from her more folkloric & equally excellent debut, with a healthy jazz lick & a more powerful soulful vocal.

Autumnal sunshine is rising above Lisbon’s rooftops & the lovely warm sounds of @gusguslevy mining classic Brazilian sounds from samba funk to schmaltzy ballads and joyous MPB, all laden with stirring string arrangements & a psychedelic sheen for @180gservices is on the headphones. Saturday is looking alright

Bouncing around the spasmodic no wave mosh pit, @thiago_nassif’s new LP for @gearboxrecords wriggles free of easy genre pigeon holing with its post truth punk funk energy, new generation tropicalismo, Carioca crooning, electro noisiness & don’t tell me what to do attitude.

With his percussive approach & a unique style rooted in the #Brazilian greats, #African religious ceremonies as much as his #São #Paulo hardcore & punk history the new LP from @kikodinucci for @tratorebr is as fresh a #guitar fronted LP you’ll hear this year.

Your dedication to finding new stuff is commendable.

There’s so much great old stuff I often forget to check the new stuff. Couple of recent(ish) ones though:

That Baiana track goes off. Love it!

Sessa is a good friend of mine, he’s just finished recording his new album which will probably be out next year. We used to play shows together back when I still had a band in 2005, 2006 and we were both teenagers. His band was called Garotas Suecas and they’re still at it, albeit without him and also without the original singer Guilherme Saldanha. Every single one of their records are fantastic.

I’ll be back with more newer stuff that might have gone under the radar.

I know most of you are probably looking for stuff that “sounds brazilian” but I highly recommend checking out Zopelar, who is a fantastic producer and put out two great albums this year:

He’s involved with the incredible project Teto Preto which is way too insane to try to explain but here’s one of their nicer tracks:

Also, for those of you with time on your hands, I highly recommend going through the instagram gallery of Discos Baratos, my friends Pino Henrique Pedra and Gui Scott’s radio show on The Lot Radio which focuses on dollar bin brazilian records.

Here’s their soundcloud page with the archive and if you listen carefully you might just hear MGG doing an old school radio spot on a show or two:

Another dude who really knows his stuff is @gustavokeno who regularly gets asked to record sets for channels all over the internet. Here’s a nice set by him:

That’s awesome - that Sessa record was a big one for us, much respect. Looking forward to exploring these.

They are different to what he’s doing now, but you can hear the influences in there for sure. He was (still is I guess) a phenomenal electric guitar player, and these guys live in their prime were so good they caused Carrie Brownstein to write a post on her NPR blog about how she couldn’t stop dancing to their music despite not understanding anything.

That IS awesome! Thanks so much for sharing all of this. So much to listen to over the coming days / weeks.

When Carnaval comes around, these guys usually lead a big crowd during São Paulo’s street carnaval festivities. Thiago França, sax player and leader of the group is one of our national treasures. Obviously there was no carnaval this year, but they did do a live just to keep the spirit alive:

Here’s his Samba for Coltrane:

This is the project he’s probably most known for, Metá Metá, with Kiko Dinucci and Jussara Marçal. Phenomenal music:

And finally one of my favorite Brazilian instrumental albums, Space Charanga:
