I heard Heaven Can Wait by Iron Maiden in a metal fabricators workshop today. I wondered if his love of Heavy Metal lead him into his line of work or vice-versa.

My dad mentioned the “M. Khan is bent” graffiti when i was a kid as he’d drive past it quite a bit apparently. Obviously it was mentioned on the Mary Whitehouse Experience.

When i was 18/19 and getting into B Boy djing I was speaking to a B Boy about the Fresh 97 VHS i had bought and the old school crews that were on the video. He went into a rant about how Morgan Khan’s poor planning of Fresh 87 and 88, added to his financial difficulties that lead to some artists on Streetsounds feeling they had not been paid fairly, or short changed, had added to the feeling in the press that Hip Hop was a fad. He put the blame squarely on Khan that the press moved onto other trends/fads and didn’t report on UK Hip Hop at all, which put the entire scene back years in terms of mainstream popularity.

Obviously a pretty unfair assessment, and i can’t speak on whether or not artists were being ripped off by him at all. I personally doubt it myself…

But… given the timing of that graffiti going up, the location, the feeling towards Khan at the time as him being crooked…

Is it likely that this graffiti was suggesting that Morgan Khan was bent, as in a crooked businessman?

he’s as bent as a nine bob note.

he still owes me money for a show that never happened which he didn’t reimburse me for, despite numerous attempts, and i know other people that he has ripped off too.

i say this with love in my heart, but i do think it’s amusing that in the “imperfect list” the first two big offenders in the british experience are “adolf hitler” and “the dentist”.

Im a big fan of Robs writing & couldn’t post this on Flightpath but one of few early Weatherall tracks I dont like , still appreciate it & the vocal / tempo doesnt allow for a full blown dub assault

I think AW would approve for the humour angle

i secretly love it when bands name themselves something and the media and public tack on a “the” at the beginning of it.

i know it totally chaps don henley’s ass that everyone calls them “the eagles” when it was supposed to be just “eagles”. today i learned that richard and karen carpenter’s band was not “the carpenters” as you might expect - but rather, just “carpenters”.

if you haven’t seen the venture brothers, you should absolutely watch it, it’s probably the best animated series ever, short of the simpsons. but, relevant to this post, from the christmas episode of VB: “you know i was the first dj at my college radio station to play the bauhaus”

i wonder if robin williams ever knew that he was featured so predominantly in what’s probably the most famous photo of larry levan.

was trying to come up with bands or singers that are universally liked. the sort that if you heard someone say “i don’t like (band or singer)” you’d think there was something seriously wrong with that person. i didn’t think about it for too long, but i could only really think of one.

the meters.

i’d be deeply suspicious of anyone who said they didn’t like the meters.
