My understanding is that whilst AI has been accelerated by a tech ‘arms race’ the Chinese are just as nervous about where this is heading because their whole system is built around the cult and control of the CCP. The last thing they want is anarchy. So everyone has a mutual interest in sitting down, if they can get past the oneupmanship…

My mate got a guided tour of NASA’s r and d department as he manages a band they were showing around. They asked how the world will end and they said ‘the machines will take over’. I didn’t buy it a few years ago.

Great article here from Jaron Lanier in the New Yorker. In summary: the bits that AI uses are ultimately created by humans and if we approach AI in the right way we have nothing to fear. The concept of “data dignity” can also be developed to ensure humans are rewarded for the content AI uses.
