Old Time Cinema

I’m partial to an old Western

Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid is an all timer
The Outlaw Josey Wales
A Few Dollars More

The 70s was a Golden period too

French Connection
Dog Day Afternoon
Serpico

Not exactly ‘old time’ but such a good mid 70’s film.

If we’re talking 70’s one of the very best is The Taking of Pelham 123. So good I read the book a few times too!

Goes in my top 5…

We got really into old movies during lockdown, the perfect escape.

Can really recommend Douglas Sirk’s 50s melodramas, so beautifully styled & art directed - every shot like a perfect photograph

He also made Imitation of Life which is a brilliant drama about racism

We also got into Powell & Pressburger, every one a masterpiece pretty much, hypnotic cinema

The Red Shoes, Colonel Blimp and A Matter of Life and Death are all incredible. Black Narcissus is just weird!

I can watch that film just for Cary Grant’s suit

The Man with the Golden Arm , Otto Preminger, Sinatra as a 50s dope fiend, ridiculously cool (free on Prime)

No one mentioned Sorcerer so I will. Keith Jarrett music in the OST too.

Marathon Man is another good 70’s thriller. Scary as hell.

Watched casablanca again on iplayer last week. Have a real soft spot for that one. Watched north by northwest again too, anything with Cary Grant is OK by me. Roman holiday is another ill always go for when I see it on there. Laurence of Arabia is another I love. Caught a bit of one on channel 5 one day over Xmas called “midnight lace” that seemed intriguing, sort of dark paranoid thriller, but I had something to do and couldn’t finish it off, haven’t been able to find it anywhere since annoyingly…

Paper Moon is brilliant. Directed by Peter Bogdanovich (Dr Melfi’s boss in The Sopranos).

Saw Sorcerer remastered at the cinema here in Wellington recently. Humid, tense film.

Love a retro movie.

If you can get Kanopy or Beamafilm through your local library - go for it.

I think they’re available globally and brimming with old movies and docs.

Caught a screening of Colonel Blimp at the BFI before Christmas. So glad to finally see it in the big screen. Incredible film.

Oh yes! Great cast. Madeline Kahn is just wonderful.

Came to say Conversation & Pelham 123, but pipped at the post. Two brilliant films.

Here are a few more of my faves:

Klute

Cercle Rouge / Samourai - Alain Delon being as smooth as silk.

Mamet’s House of Games (Dialogue used in Foxbase Alpha)

Cruising (Pacino in leather on poppers)

Being There

Paris Texas / Wings of Desire

Rififi

Notorious - One of my favourite Hitchcock’s.

Some of Cary Grant’s screwball comedies are worth a watch too.

The only Hitchcock to stay away from is Frenzy, deeply unpleasant and would never be made now (I’m surprised it was on TV)
