So great that the internet is actually archiving genius things. Here’s a show from Danielle and Rochelle show on London pirate Centreforce in 1989 that Emma Warren just sent me… It’s got Twin Hype on it. So nice to hear that in its original context… Hip house ahoy. What’s the tune at 23mins with the rock to the beat sample… Another place another time…
Big Bass n all that stuff
My mate taped LFO off one of these shows so could play at a small night as a pre release
I used to listen to loads of pirate radio as a kid (13 onwards/circa early 1980’s), we lived in Thamesmead SE London so had a great selection of stations to pickup…JFM across the Thames in Ilford/Essex way (with Froggy, even sent off for one of his mix tapes, wish i still had it…he was an early beat mix pionner in the UK after meeting Levan), Horizon which bacame Solar Radio? & LWR were the main ones.
Great education in all things Soul, Jazz Funk & Electro…remember having a Horizon Radio t’shirt & then a Solar radio car sticker on my mk3 Ford Cortina once i passed my test a little later. God i am sounding old now …
Another JFM and Horizon listener here - brought me the music before i was old enough to go out or to have the money to buy it.
I eventually co hosted a show on Toxteth Community Radio in Liverpool and oddly nice to hear the FM distortion and retuning on some of these shows compared to seamless internet streams, and also four minute ads for Raves in long gone clubs and sports halls.
LWR was the one I remember listening to most. “LWR, you are, in tune to.”
Keep meaning to buy this:
Hoping someone somewhere has more tapes of WYBC Leeds late 80s, where I heard so many House records for the first time.
JFM, Horizon, Invicta, LWR, Solar, Kiss, Starpoint, TKO, Centreforce, Sunrise and Fantasy were the stations I listened to in 80s London.
There’s a lot of info and some audio here:

Another good resource, London only though I think.
Archive of 808 State shows on Manchester’s Sunset 102 from 1989 - 1993.
Most have track listings too:
used to sometimes tune into Girls FM, Don FM, Flex FM. Decent signal in SW London early 90s
The first ones I listened to were JFM and DBC / Dread Broadcasting Corporation (which had a near mythical status amongst the music loving kids at my middle school, as you could only seem to pick it up very occasionally).
Then later LWR and Kiss, and Girls FM later still.
The 808 state shows are very funny. There’s one where their mate turns up with one shoe on and they’re killing themselves laughing : )
My friend Richard Solid State Hardcastle (whom Im sure some will know) Saturday afternoon session in prep for Sasha at the Music Factory ( usually Ralphy or Dave Seaman so a BIG Deal)
I was too snobby & went to Venus to listen to Prog House !!!
He would gather a lot of friends in Studio ( squatted flat in Park Hill) for frivolties between the deep house for his weekly show
Every shop in Sheffield used to have on live
The music all started getting too hard and fast after a bit but I had a lot of very stoned Tuesday nights laughing along to this show in uni days (including with Emma W!) So weird listening to some of them again and just remembering so much of the music and nonsense banter as if it was 5 years ago not 35 years ago.
Dream FM was the soundtrack in my Leeds years Dream FM | expletive undeleted
I got my first ever ( and only I think) shout out on 808’s Sunset show from my first proper gf, when I was 14, at the tail end of '89.
I think Darren read it out and it consisted of my name being repeated over and over and over, someone at school had taped it and was playing it one night when a group of us was meeting up to drink Thunderbird and smoke a fiver’s hash.
I was pretty embarrassed at the time but wish I had the tape now.
