Out there next week, only after a chill out break with the wife really, alot of reading, cathing up listening to shows Howlers, Balearic Mikes & Kelvin Andrews (BTN shows mainly) but any tips much appreciated…might make the trip to the weed farm which is near Montego Bay? Dont smoke these days but interested
Have whacked aload of dub on my i-pod, so will get in the vibe know doubt…i do love a bit of Dub but not dancehall etc…to shouty shouty for me.
FYI…we are around Orange Bay in Negril
Thanks, Sean
Being a regular visitor to Negril over the past 30 years, i could go on all day here, but i won’t!
If you’ve not been before, you are for an absolute treat. Negril is amazing.
My advice, stay away from the touristy trips and get friendly with a local rasta, they will take you to the best places off the beaten track. Most of them have their own weed farms in the hills they will be happy to take you to. No need to go to Montego bay, Negril is much better.
Try and visit Mayfield falls, much better than Dunns River falls which is far to busy
Ricks cafe, touristy but a cracking vibe. Ace reggae and dub music, weed everywhere and every night centered around the sunset. There are plenty other quieter and less touristy sunset bars though as well. The best ones are the little wooden shacks on the beach.
Food wise, the jerk stalls at the side of the roads are the best. Proper Jamaican scran.
If you can go to Negril and not get wasted, you’re a better man than i am! Weed everywhere! even people selling on the airport, in the hotels and on the streets which is mostly of excellent quality.
Prepare yourself for a great week
OMG we went last September - i’ll just let you read the positives above. Wasn’t our experience at all.
Tell me more mate ? Interested to know of other peoples experiences , good and bad
Worst holiday we’ve had (even including Turkey!). Constant hassle from stepping outside the hotel onwards. Men trying to walk with us back to our room, attitude from people working wherever we ate. Walked into Negril itself one day - from the second we crossed the bridge, hassle. In the supermarket a lad of about 16 trying to shove a bag of weed in my hand as he looks back at the older guy willing him on to obviously then try and demand money. We wanted to leave on the second day. Beautiful beach though.
I don’t cope well with being aggressively hassled.
The whole ‘yeah man’ thing is an act to try and get you to drop your guard so they can rip you off
Ok Yeh, i can’t disagree with that. You do get hassled a lot, I’ve found that to be the same on most Caribbean islands, but Jamaica is especially bad for it, and it can be intimidating considering a lot of the hasslers are in gangs carrying weapons. When i mentioned about getting friendly with a local Rasta, i think that helps a lot as you get hassled less, and they will look after you. But i guess it’s making sure they are trustworthy first.
All good info for @SeanieR Look after yourself brother. If you do get a rastafarian chaperone, make sure he’s a big dude who can look after you
We’ve also been to Cuba and Barbados where we barely got hassled at all.
I’m a massive Negril fan. I lived in Jamaica for a few years and go back often. The beach is stunning and although touristy in places it is so long that you can find your own spot with a vibe that suits you. The water for swimming is beautiful.
Check out the posters on the roundabout as you go into the town for events, you often get live shows from big artists. Sizzla was there a couple of weeks ago at Roots Bamboo and Luciano playing later this month. Shows start late though - it will say 9pm but they often won’t be on til 11 or 12…
I recommend going for dinner at Rockhouse Hotel on the cliffs and Miss Lilys on the beach.
Mayfield Falls is beautiful as Huffy says. You can swim and wade up a series of cascading falls. The guides are great and will show you the way. I also agree not to bother with Montego Bay.
If you get hassle from people then a polite and firm no thanks normally does the trick.
I expect the usual buy my weed or gear talk…got all that from beach dudes in Mexico & Dominican…but normally “nah, you alright” does the trick. Im used to hassle as have been Egypt, Marrakech & Tunisia loads which can be quite bad if your not used to it, but generally a polite thanks but no thanks etc does the trick & doesn’t bother me.
But sounds another level in Jamaica?
What ever I’ll go with flow & keep my guard…thanks for the info though Fella’s.
Barbados is paradise. Amazing island and people.
But alot more expensive than the Dominican & Jamaican sadly.
My wife just reminded me of something that happened to us in Barbados many years ago. Think we were staying in Speightstown at the time. I’d just purchased some greenery, so went for a walk along the beach. Sat on some steps of this huge house where the garden backed on to the beach. Started to roll one when there was a sudden waft of smoke coming from over the wall of the house. Me and Mrs H looked over the wall and who should be standing there but Cilla Black
(yeh probably one more suited to the small claims court thread - i got stoned with Cilla, well not really, just at the same time)
Ha ha…brilliant did she shoutout "Surprise, Surprise "!
…sorry to the young ones reading this, but wasn’t that one of her catchphrases?
“Surprise, surprise! It’s Cilla here with the quality gear”
All makes sense now and explains while Cilla was having such a lorra lorra laughs back in the day.
This is next weekend if you’ll be around ONE LOVE FESTIVAL | First In Line Entertainment Ltd.
