You beauty thanks, I’ll give it a look!
Don’t get only 8gb!
It may even be ok for now but in a few years it won’t be. Best to think of the 16gb as the “base” model.
8gb is fine. Used logic for years with it, now use reaper. Have done exactly the same thing you’re looking at doing with my Digitakt (8 Chan’s audio) + more using a Mac aggregate audio device. My Mac is old and fairly low spec can’t even remember what os it’s stopped at but it’s mostly working fine. Never had issues recording multiple tracks. 8gb is actually alot. Perspective has shifted, with consumerism mostly. If you’re doing stuff with audio on a ‘im recording some bits at home in my free time’ basis (that’s me at least) it’s grand, seriously. If you’re working with video or a shit ton of stems, inputs or in post production, different story.
A lot of VST’s are memory hogs. If you use Ableton and use their instruments, it might be fine. The first time you try and open a few plugins 8gb becomes little, fast. Not so much apple’s fault, I think a lot of the programming on 3rd party VSTs doesn’t do a great job about cpu and memory hogging. I buy my computers to last more than 5 years, at least 10. Haven’t had less than 8 GB for at least the last 3.
Going to wait and see if we get any new models in Nov, no mad rush, thanks for the input!
8Gb on the silicon Macs is easily the equivalent of 16Gb standard
I use a very old computer, a PowerMac G5, and I enjoy messing around with new / old hardware instruments and effects instead of using the latest plugins. For recording audio, it’s fine. I went through a couple of computers for music before that and then decided I just didn’t enjoy pushing the computer to its limits and dealing with issues.
I have a recent MacBook for my boring day job and I haven’t even bothered to install music software on that as I’d rather play my existing instruments and record on the old machine rather than troubleshooting compatibility and buffer sizes.
I can relate to this to some extent. I still run everything off a win 7 install on my music pc. I only use it for music anyway.
Ran a dual boot for a bit with win 10 but win 7 actually runs my set up more efficiently even using some pretty resource draining plug ins.
DAW recommendations for Windows OS? Thinking of trying my hand at editing. No production experience whatsoever but happy to pay for decent software, or rather let my partner pay as a Xmas gift
I’d always recommend Ableton Live over anything else.
Another vote for Ableton. Although, I use Audacity for all editing/cutting/pasting/etc.
Thanks guys. Would Standard suffice for a beginner?
Yeah, definitely. You can always upgrade to Suite. I’ve only ever had the standard version.
Or for no outlay Reaper very good for editing audio but can take a while to get your head around
Thanks, I’ll check that one out too. I think Ableton’s likely to take some time to get my head around too. Notice there’s a free trial for both, likely to take advantage of that before fully committing to one
The thing with reaper is that it’s a never ending trial! No restrictions
Even better, thanks
Stock plugins, no big multi sample libraries and you’re probably fine with 8 tracks. Likely an m4 Mac mini later this year but will prob be same price and similar premium for 16gb. Keep an eye on Apple refurbished - no Mac minis there atm.
I’ve used a bottom of range mini m2 with 8gb with ableton. Was fine as long as I stuck to mostly stock plug-ins. Mood killer worrying about ram, buffer size and flattening tracks tho. Didn’t use Logic on that one but the m’s do seem to handle ram better. Didn’t hit any issues with the hard drive either which is supposed to be dodgy (slow) with 256gb on m2 mini.
What’s everyone’s fave delay hardware/pedal for insert/send and return duties (aside from the OG Space Echo, out of my league!)?
I’ve been looking at both the Empress Echo System and the Strymon El Capistan V2 but are there any other I should consider? Prefer MIDI capabilities
Very happy with the Pigtronix Echolution 2 as standalone delay pedal (apart from now mostly using Line6 HX effects), their latest version is Echolution 3:
