Lee Perry doco from 2019
Really enjoyed the founding fathers documentary, thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing Paul, an amazing insight into the decadence of a big name artist such as Peter Gabriel at that time. Of course it’s my age, but 81 was the best year for music imho, pre midi days, the dawn of digital music tech.
Saw Peter Gabriel at the NEC in 83, it was amazing, the show opened with Rhythm of the Heat, Larry Fast was the only musician on the stage, I guess tending to the Fairlight etc, the rest of the band entered from the rear of the auditorium, with what seemed to be marching bass drums, all of them banging out the huge ‘tribal’ drum part. It was totally electrifying. Then when they got on stage Peter Gabriel ‘announced’ the start of the show with the intro vocal wail (don’t know what else to call it), the audience went wild. I wasn’t a big Peter Gabriel fan, but that was the best gig I’ve ever been to by a long shot. I was 14. Years later I sampled that intro off the ‘plays live’ album and used it to open my own sets hehehe. The record is a perfect snapshot of his 83 UK tour.
That’s amazing! Did not know that you could take a Fairlight on tour, I always thought it was a behemoth of studio tackle that was hard to move and was a studio tool.
The Arthur Russell one is beautiful, absolutely heartbreaking. It’s on Prime I think. Big recommend!
YES to the Northern Lights film, loved seeing how they started it all from the most isolated town in the most isolated country in Northern Europe, no internet, no record shops, no magazines, no clubs. And the Erot part is heartbreaking.
Ans also YES to the Grace Jones film, the scene where she performs ‘pull up to the bumper’ in a gay club in new york is incredible, also the nightclub scene. And she’s the same age as my mum!
I heard that
I can’t find it to stream anywhere, I’ve got it on DVD, but the Flaming Lips Doc called Fearless Freaks is very good, showing a lot of creativity, fun and a DIY ethos tempered by the trials and tribulations of heroin abuse and recovery. Highly recommended.
Not sure about these movie sites but here is link…

Goa doc that is worth a watch
Off the top of my head I can think of Duran Duran who also toured with a Fairlight, there must have been others too.
Aztec Camera used to play live with a Fairlight weirdly enough.
I remember my elder brother talking about the Fairlight a lot in the 80’s. I think Thomas Dolby used one in his show but I’m going to check that now.
The first time I went to Australia(88?), I went to the auctioning off of Fairlight stock because the business had folded. By then they were at the very big Keyboard stage, but it was heartbreaking to walk around the auctioneers viewing all those amazing bits of musical history.
Watched this last night.
The Tribe Called Quest doc on Amazon was better than expected. Quite sad too
