Montenegro Travel Tips

Starting to plan our summer holiday options and, in a rare moment of family unity, we all seem to agree on Montenegro.

Any tips on places to stay, beaches to avoid, restaurants, etc, greatly received.

Had a week in Budva in 23, stayed at https://www.avalaresort.com/destination

Really good hotel, next to the old town which is great. Kotor Bay is stunning, another walled city like Budva, was in a Bond film, did a day trip on a boat from there which I would recommend highly. The airport is quite mad so get there in plenty of time on the way home!

Tivat is a super tiny airport, we flew into there and took us a couple of hours to get through customs. Might be worth thinking about flying into Croatia and traveling over the border.

Arriving was no drama but leaving was chaos !

Did Montenegro last summer.

Stayed in Kotor Bay - Prčanj specifically.

Beautiful.
Stunning.

but overall MNT has a strong Eastern European flavour… English wasn’t hugely spoken in my experience. Infrastructure is still a WIP in places… our villa struggled with water a couple of days.

Food was ok… tricky for the vegans.
Lotta sausage in the supermarkets deli counters.

Never really found a decent bottle of wine but then I wasn’t looking too hard… €40 - €60 for a rosĆ© in restaurants.

Really fucking hot.

Beaches in Kotor bay were pretty gravelly.
Again - deffo Eastern Europe flavour… a light touch of the A$AP Rocky’s in summertime

We had to travel to Budva for some sand.
It was down a mad path that hadnt seen much by way of human intervention. Rustic.

Swerve the main beaches and keep going through the terrifying tunnel and pull a sharp right into the fortress-y bit

Nice day at the beach - beers, food yadda yadda at a decent bar but the two beach bars we went to played the worst music… ā€˜live and local’ being the best shorthand and it went on for fucking hours… accordions and slightly out of tune male vocalists.

It was definitely not Balearic.

Private boat trip to the blue caves was worth it… they take you to a quieter bit that’s a better swim experience than the ā€˜public’ tour… worth the spend.

The ble car’s worth it if it’s a clear day.

Dodged Lake skadar - we had a lot of ā€˜natural beauty’ going on in Kotor and a longish drive didn’t really appeal.

Also due to my vertigo, disliking mountain roads and being the only fucking driver we swerved the serpentine road…

TBH I really didn’t do much… read, sat by the pool, had a few dinners out… I’m sure there’s much more to see, depends how busy you want to make yourself.

Bottom line:

It was my first holiday in 7 years and I really wanted a fly-and-flop number and didn’t quite get that, but that’s my fault.

Apologies if this is a negative vibe… it’s my honest experience of the visit and I did have a nice time - promise.

Much appreciated, mate. I’d rather get an honest opinion. That’s all very helpful.

Thanks x

We had an local-rent AirBnB on the bay of Kotor, very much cheap & cheerful option. Beautiful scenery. Swimming off the jetty (no beaches as such). Decent meals out, but all with some of the most incredible sunsets & settings. A disconcerting vibe – looks like (stereotypical) Greece but with locals who act like (stereotypical) Russians but fine when you get used to it. Not rude just undemonstrative.

Old town lovely but gets crowded when the cruise ships pull in.

Hot as fuck.

I didn’t even notice it was you…
Gizza bell if you want mate.

I did possibly paint a bleak picture of it, but it is jaw droppingly beautiful at Kotor… just a bit gravelly on the beach front which comprise of funny little concrete jettys all round the bay.

There are some beach type beaches in Kotor / prcanj

Deffo fly into tivat as it’s 20 mins to Kotor and there’s no passport control (if you fly to Dubrovnik there’s a big drive and borders)
