Modern Classical, etc

Thought it would be nice to have a thread where we could post the piano studies, the downest of the downtempo, the rainy day records and the like.

Here are my three starters to get the ball rolling.

Quebec artist who truly embodies the ability to give her music space and allow the parts between notes to be as powerful as the music itself. A true start to finish, no skips record.

I find this record to be playful while also being quite somber. There’s a uniqueness to a lot of the use of samples and his approach to melody is breathtaking ag times. One of the records of the year.

You all know this one. Still as incredible as the day I first heard it. A true essential.

I’m adding this piece of brilliance because a thread like this would be remiss without it.

Love this sort of stuff, though mainly in winter when it’s raining and dark at 4.

Great idea. I can listen to this in any weather, all year round!

I made a playlist in Spotify for when I (occasionally) meditate, but I dip into it even when I’m not. I thought there were about 15 tracks but it turns out to include over 60. Looking forward to growing it some more.

Here’s a little sample:

I’m going to be bombarding this thread, be warned!

Perfection. I tried to license it once to put on a 12” and they wanted £10k

There’s the Steve Reich stuff which I never tire of (I’ll say some of it is quite difficult to perform. It’s not as easy as it would seem to play the same figure repeatedly for pages at a time). I got to play in this for a recital a few years back.

Top one for me

Ginastera quartets

Someh Satoh (love this whole album with Anne Akiko Meyers)

Jon Iverson & Prins Emanuel

That is amazing, and when I opened it in Apple Music it made me download the classical music app. Not sure what the difference is.

What a record though. Wow.

I worked at an arts boarding school that had a full orchestra and once a year they’d play some Ginastera at their concerts and it always stood out.

Love that Group Listening track. Is that a Roedelius cover?

The whole album is great, includes a lovely Arthur Russell cover

No idea, but would love to hear the original if it is. Will investigate.

Edit: according to the BC blurb - thanks @AndyM - it looks like it is.

Yes it is. It’s the title track from his 1981 album.
