Modded or mid-price rotary mixers

Oh wowsers, that’s a horrendous cover!

I have used one a couple of times at a hifi bar here in Perth (Astral Weeks). It sounds great but a few of the pots are a bit wobbly - most of the DJs are pretty sedate and the bar has only been open 2-3 years so I don’t think wear and tear should be a thing at this point. Also I remember not enjoying cueing on it. I think it may be an older/discontinued model because it has two knobs in the top right corner (same height as the VUs) but the 2525s on the website don’t feature these.

Also, I missed having a three-band EQ because typically I swap the bass over when mixing. The two-band means it’s too drastic (and I had to try and muster up some skill from somewhere instead).

(not me in the picture)

having bought one or two mixers without testing them out in person, I would highly recommend trying any out before buying. fader curves (I know this is a rotary), and things like how eq’s are split, and cueing etc. are impossible to judge until you’re actually using it.

luckily I was able to sell the mixer I had that I hated the fader’s on and get one that I like. but yeah, it was doing my head in until I sorted it out and swapped it out.

imho the recent ones sound really punchy, which is good for older recordings but takes some getting used to for more “modern mastering”. like when HD TV’s first came out and the picture looked slightly weird, but then became familiar.

I’ve mixed on this one quite a bit too. 100% agreed that only having 2 EQs on the individual channels is annoying. But some of the Condesas have the same thing, so there must be a market/preference for it?

With the cueing, there’s no option to have any mix on the headphones (which my partner hates), it’s only 1 channel. Is that what you found?

I also find the channel EQs don’t isolate that much. I know a lot of mixers are similar, but I personally prefer EQs with the ability to completely cut (like my Ecler). Not sure what other mixers give 100% cut/isolation. (I feel Vestax is another one that does?)

Like you said, it’s an older model so the 2025 models might be well different, and sound-wise I have no complaints.

Take all of this with a grain of salt as I’m not super into rotary mixers and prefer quality, analogue fader mixers.

Cueing: the bar that has the mixer doesn’t have a booth monitor and the position of the speakers isn’t ideal for the DJ (great for the crowd/room though) so not being able to have both channels playing in headphones is a bit of a drag.

I think I have settled longterm on the Ecler WARM2. The EQ is great (and full-cut), it’s handy being able to leave the isolator with the highs rolled off slightly and the mid boosted a touch, channel volume knobs are linear (1=1, 5=5, 10=10) rather than logarithmic (1=0, 5=1, 7=10…, that’s what it feels like anyway). About to enter the world of putting a delay pedal in the effects send/return.

The Xone23 has full cut EQ too but logarithmic channel curves. Used a WARM2 at a gig once and was immediately taken with it. Occasionally miss the Xone23’s filter but am surviving.
