Mid-Year Report

Truly just laying down a marker for the end of the year true swing at it.

Same categories as always: single of the year so far, record of the year so far, remix of the year so far, reissue of the year so far, discovery of the year so far (not limited to music so you scent hounds have at it), and clobber of the year and anything else you’d care to mention.

Single of the year so far

Crooked Man and the All Seeing I - Return of The Crooked Cat

Was put onto this by Paul Hughes in one of his rare but much welcomed “have you heard this?” DMs on Instagram, and I’ve listened to it hundreds of times. Really hits the spots and I love how it builds.

Remix of the year so far

Mica Millar - Flashlights - Leo Zero’s Extended Disco Version

New to this one but I genuinely can’t think of another remix that made me rewind a mix and get as excited every time it played. Have since been starting my days with it and will probably be sick of it in a few weeks but its brilliant, and it made me explore the album this came from and that is lovely as well if you have the time.

Reissue of the year so far

Chiwoniso - Zvichapera

Hunee ended a Dekmantel/Boiler Room with this years ago and I have been seeking out a copy ever since. It goes for eyewatering prices on discogs but a recent reissue has solved the issue. Stunning record that truly needs to be heard start to finish. Bit of a sad story as well as Chiwoniso died shortly after recording it.

Discovery of the year so far

Eden - Free (Extended mix)

I had never heard this before in any way, shape or form. Just a brilliant record, can’t say much more.

Clobber of the year

Kith for adidas Football Track Suit Top https://kith.com/collections/mens-apparel-outerwear/products/jy3464?variant=45129163866240

Was in Miami for my anniversary (stay at The Plymouth if you go) and Kith was across the street so had a cheeky look. They had a 15% off special so I went for this. Was sweltering in May, so I thought I’d get home and have it on ice until the autumn, but New England had other plans and I have worn it a lot. Gotten a lot of compliments on it, which, being slightly awkward, always ends with a nervous grunt as appreciation from my end. Great quality as well.

Mix of the year

Wavey by Shake

There isn’t a single dud on this, Programming is excellent as always from Shake. Just a fantastic mix (and there was a lot of competition).

As always thank you all for being a friendly corner of the internet where I can occasionally sail on cloudy days from here in the US.

Thanks so much for the heads up on the repress. I have always hoped that it would get another run. Beautiful record.

Thanks Marc. Very kind words. Glad you enjoyed it.

Love the Mica Millar - its so good. Will also need to check out the others tunes mentioned!

Mine was badly scratched on one side & they had no more copies so I kept it :frowning:

it’s a race to see who’ll pull the trigger on the only US copy for sale - will it be me or @Casual first?

Can we work out a joint custody arrangement?

Nice idea, @casual.

OK, here’s mine:

Single of the year so far
Céline Dessberg - Selenge

Franco Mongolian artist. Mongolian harp. Sven Wunder adjacent. Sublime, as the French might say. Heard this earlier in the year. Kept meaning to pick up a copy on 7”. Now supply seems to have dried up. I snoozed and I loozed. Gah.

Remix of the year so far
Artist? - Blessing Of Shango (Kolago Kult rework)

Love this. Copped it after a heads up from @piers, I think. Thanks!

Reissue of the year so far
The Impossible Dreamers - Spin

Ramshackle percussion-heavy B-side workout from the 90s. Thanks to Dr Rob.

Discovery of the year so far
Manuel Martínez Daglio - Enciéndete

A very recent discovery. In fact, just a couple of days ago, courtesy of Mr Big Happy’s Insta: El Salvadoran mind-frying 70s jazz fusion. Blazing (sorry).

Clobber of the year so far

I got a chore jacket embroidered by Giulio Miglietta on his last open studio day. The embroidery was really just an excuse to hang out with him, he’s a lovely guy who always brings interesting chat.

Mix of the year so far

I’m trying not to listen to mixes as I find them too distracting, always wanting find out tunes, checking mixing technique . But I did start listening to this yesterday following a tip from Syms Jr last week and then the interview on BBTT yesterday. Got half way through and really enjoyed it.

EDIT: just realised this is from last YEAR not last month :man_facepalming: Oh well, consider it a bonus lol

It may come as no surprise that Jazzman Gerald has to copies of that sublime Céline Dessberg 7" on his discogs page. What a find.

I can’t seem to find the Leo Zero version of Mica Millar - can anyone point me in the right direction to give it a spin?

I’ll ask Leo if I can share it. I’m certain he’ll say yes as he’s beyond generous with his work

I’ll ping it over shortly

I’m so used to be long ripped off over here for import 7”s that I thought that was a bargain.

Amazing! Thanks so much - bought a good chunk of his edits from Bandcamp so expecting good things!

I think @howler shared on another thread

I was about to post a moan. I had it in my basket on the Jazzman site last week (£14 iirc) but when I went back yesterday, they’d sold out. So when you said it was on Discogs for £23 I was a little miffed. BUT I just checked back and they seem to have more stock. £16.99.

Indeed. The let’s hear your mixes thread.
