Might be bit of a stretch but a lot of these songs could have been played at the Saint at 6 or 7am when the drugs are wearing off. Also remind me of the last hour on the Salute to the men of Vauxhall mixes.

I think he wrote it as a teenager, the lyrics are so good, as someone who grew up in a one parent family I can really relate to the sadness, frustration & pain in them.
