Marrakech - Recommendations

Another recommendation that’s outside the Medina:

Restaurant Layal El Noor
Ignore google maps, it’s literally next door to (and part of) Ari Boutique Hotel on Boulevard Moulay Rachid (and somewhere between the two respective google maps markers). All the more amusing cos we were staying at Ari that night (after coming back from the desert trip).

Very nice contemporary cool decor and ambience. The mixed salad starter was very generous (6-8 different things, IIRC!) and the slightly deconstructed harira was one of those flavour combos that you did a tiny double take at, while realizing how well it works… the lamb tangia was similarly generous, but my tajine was a disappointment in comparison.

The breakfast buffet was very good, and is open to all (not just hotel guests) - and I think was very well priced.

Snack Ben Omar
11 Rue Bab Tagzhout

They only do one thing (brochettes/meat skewers) but done really well. You can get them in bread for 40Dh, or a plate with salad (tomatoes), sides (chopped onions, marinated olives, and chilli paste) and bread for 50Dh.

Honestly, just splurge on the full plate - the salad and olives are well worth it .

Soooo good, and insanely cheap.

North Medina area, just NE of Sidi Ben Slimane.

Good to know ( not the gutrot obvs) as I’m an easy sell for some local meat product like that.

Cash wise dirham or do they want €? Cashless in many places?

In fairness, the steak was kind of green before it was cooked. The warning signs were there, I was just too stoned to care.

Dirham. Revolut is your friend.

Was surprised at how many places take card, pretty much everywhere. Even the fella in the medina who sold me a bag. My card was cloned shortly after I returned though so…

Haha good effort

La Poste / Al Barid ATMs don’t charge a fee for cash withdrawals.

There’s a post office on the other side of Jma El Fnaa from the restaurant Howler mentioned above, with 4-5 ATMs (2 on either side of the entrance, and 2-3 on the other). They sometimes run out of cash so if you see one long queue and the others don’t have one, that’s why…!

Just watching a lovely Ben Fogle about a couple who’ve built an absolutely stunning home in Morocco, will post the link when I can be arsed

Any e-sim recommendations for Morocco?

Airalo worked just fine for me

I picked up an INWI Sim from a kiosk at Casablanca airport arrivals (literally opposite the baggage reclaim belt, so you can do it while you’re waiting for your bag - took less than five minutes).

€10 for 10GB and 100 mins calls.
They’ll try to sell you the 20GB/€20 package but I’d heard about the other one ahead of time and asked for it, as I knew that would be more than enough data for me.

I believe they offer eSIM and physical SIM options.

Orange and Maroc Telecom are the other domestic telcos.

Also worked fine for my wife, she’s got a global plan, but getting a SIM on arrival is half the cost.

GigSky also worked fine for me. You can get a free Gig to use in any country they serve, with certain Visa cards:
