Went there with my wife as well in 2017. We were young and quite nervous or at least i was But we never had any hassle or trouble. The few scam-artists we experienced actually got put in place by some locals asking them to stop and leave us alone. We lived in a riad right in the old town. Amazing experience! Jardin Majorelle must be mentioned. Even if its quite touristy. Also MACAAL is a must. We ate several time at Le Jardin in the old town. Amazing place. I also tried to hunt down old LPs and cassettes but it was really hard. And oddly a lot of the places that sold music had old formats sealed off.
Overall - nice experience! Would definitely do it again. I know some people that had other more negative experiences but we never had any. Other than the culture shock of coming from a nordic country to a place so different in many ways.
Currently on last day of Marrakesh break. Absolutely loved it, got through many of your recommendations and really enjoyed. Searched for the lads (see above) in vain, Mrs made it clear that she wasnât happy about seeking out alternative suppliers.
If anyone ever heads this way and needs a breaks from the madness of the city, recommended Beldi Country Club on a day pass. Short taxi ride, amazing food, beautiful surroundings and peace and quiet
La Pergola was good for food / evening meal and drinks. Book ahead. In fact, book ahead for all decent food and drink.
TukTuk tour a good way to get to see the city over an hour or two, provides employment for disabled locals and a combined ticket gets you into photography museum, while your driver waits, and into secret garden at the end.
Leave yourself plenty time to get through airport on way back. Checkpoints and queues are never ending, especially passport control
If youâre looking for vinyl, thereâs only one place in Marrakech to go that Iâm aware of and thatâs Jaafarâs place near Le Jardin. Mostly local 7s in pretty bad nick but youâll find a few clean ones in there if you look hard enough. Heâs a great bloke and his brother owns/owned a perfume shop next door. I spent a good hour or so with him listening to records whilst my girlfriend at the time was next door having some mad personalised perfume experience - win win. Edit: Canât seem to find anything about the perfume place so may not be there anymore.
This was March 2020 so things may have changed but I believe the record shop is still there. He did make an Instagram account, hasnât posted on there for a while but is active on WhatsApp if you give him a shout - number is in his IG bio - https://www.instagram.com/jaafar.jeef?igsh=MTloZjdmb2k4ZmRwcQ==
I donât often use my credit card but did so last week to purchase a bag in the souk. Last night my card issuer alerted me to someone attempting to purchase a drone or drones online using my account.
Iâm not necessarily accusing the souk vendor but I donât think itâs a coincidence
Off here on Friday for 10 days. Cannot wait! Although itâs more as a way of getting our son to revise away from the distractions of London, so not too much touristy stuff on the agenda!
Iâve chosen to stay about 20 mins outside the city, so we get a nice pool etc, and so will be mainly cooking in our Airbnb. Iâm sure weâll venture in a couple of times though, so will see how.much itâs all changed since the last time we were there in 2009.
Ha! Weâre flying out on Friday night too (but into Casablanca, as thereâs a direct flight from Toronto) and then train to Marrakech. Staying in a veh bling Riad for 3 nights, and then a 4-day trip with a couple of nights at a desert camp in Erg Chigaga, come back to overnight in Gueliz, then train to Casa for a night there and check out the Grand Mosque etc, and then an early evening flight home.
Our original trip was supposed to be five years ago. Our daughter was supposed to go to Nantes for 3 weeks on a school French exchange trip, and we were flying out to Marrakech the day after. Two days before she was supposed to leave, the plug was pulled on her trip, and everything started shutting down here very quickly in the following 48 hours⊠so we are very much looking forward to this!
Got back home on Sunday night and still trying to process it all⊠incredible.
Iâve been bunging a load of pics up on Instagram (I keep my account private, but hmu if you like - Iâm andybgpz over there) but they donât convey the scale and sensory overload of it all (in the best possible way).
Can highly recommend Riad Kherredine in Marrakech, and Nick and Boboâs Desert Camp in Erg Chigaga. Neither were particuarly cheap, but worth every penny.
The whole trip more than exceeded our expectations. I suspect weâll be making a return trip to Morocco at some point.
We had a great meal here. It overlooks Jemaa El-Fmaa, but itâs not too expensive and the quality of food and service were excellent. Much better than the food stalls in the square which we found pretty bland and they really do rip you off.
Managed to rock up and score a table right by the balcony on the top floor. Food and service was decent, and the view was unparalleled.
@howler did you try the camel tagine? I couldnât turn that down, no matter how touristy it seemed⊠was somewhere between goat and beef, in a good way.
e2a: ha - just realized we had the same lentil starter, and my wife said âthat mixed grill looks familiarâŠâ!!
