Light Relief

That in my memory was the stage where everyone started wanting a Diamond Back

I sadly never reached those giddy heights, but we did pay homage to a friend who got one-piling round to his house to gaze in wonder…

Me and my best friend both had one of those small choppers (my big brother had a grifter) and they were stolen, only to turn up on a fairground ride. They’d literally just welded the bikes to the platform, not even re-painted them. Fuckers.

And it used to be a juice cup placed in the back wheel to make it sound like a motorbike :sunglasses:

I loved my white Mag Burner. Right up until it was robbed at knifepoint near Tuffnel Park tube in my 1st year at secondary school. Knife crime is nothing new (but arguably alot worrse now) :frowning:

What don’t you get? Bloody Choppers!

Years before my Skyway with green mags (bought from BMX Beats’ Andy Ruffell), I would pretend to be Erik Estrada from Chips. Here’s me, just off out ‘cruising with some handcuffs’…

This was what I had… Should’ve bloody kept it now looking at the price… 1400 quid:see_no_evil:. My pride and joy for years, soon ditched the pads though much to my folks’ dismay. Did a potts mod on it too for the front brake… Not that I could do the tricks.

Lusted after a Haro Freestyler for years, never got one. Still scarred.

I really liked those big proto-BMX pre-mountain bikes (cruisers?) like the Raleigh Bomber - similar thing?
Would love one now.

Just found this link.

Good to know I wasn’t totally imagining trackers.

Sounds similar to the development of mountain bikes in California, OG cruiser frames (Schwinn) plus derailleur gears plus motorcycle brakes

Get me out of this rabbit hole now!

Cow horns? Basically a racer with huge wide handlebars. You could only ride one wearing double denim with cut off sleeves.

Yep - I had one of those when I was 10 or so. I really didn’t like it. So impractical. Was always scraping my hands on walls.

Used to see Norm crusing around Acton on his Choppers. They go for for silly money nowadays.

We used to make Trackers too… buy a frame, paint it as you say in mad colours, straighten out the forks (no idea why but looked cool). Wheels with larger hub things, knobbly tyres, cow horn bars.
Bloody great fun.
