Latest Refuge Business:
Some usual faces around here
Bright-eyed and bushy tailed, my latest Voices show now up:
Cheers - love that Jody Watley dub (immediately wantlisted)
from my last party, mid way through, before the guests:
My latest effort on voices…just fancied playing some house this month so a bit less balearicy and a bit less sunrisey!
Here’s this week’s show on 1BTN

Much to my shame, I had never heard the original but this certainly is a banger will be keeping my eyes and ears peeled for news of the official release!
Thanks Craig.
More info here as and when I have some ( I take no pleasure in being a subject of the Zuckerverse I might add)

Sandstorm was pure eargasm. Remember hearing that out for the first time. OMG. Suddenly, anything else in music (or indeed life) briefly ceased to matter
thanks mate
Got in the wonky mood and pressed record the other night. Impromptu mix of disco, Italo, house inspired vibrations. Turned out really nicely I think. Compared to what usually happens when the record button is pressed.
I really want to get back to recording mixes, but dread the process of getting the sound right.
Perhaps with some forum help I can overcome this fear!
I have deck into rotary.
Rotary into Zoom.
I then take the file off the memory disk into audacity and export to wav/mp3.
Simples! I’ve never taken a production course so no idea of Dbs or using Ableton.
I sometimes use Bandcamp to edit if I retake a blend.
Most of the time when I get it to the laptop for playback I find out the whole thing is clipping on the kick drum scrunch-scrunch-scrunch
I try to read the levels on the Zoom when I am recording (and this sounds like a massive flake out!!) but the backlight goes off after a while so I can’t see the bars on the level.
The red light on the Zoom is often on, but sometimes that’s ok, and sometimes it’s not!
I’ve done some mixes that are so quiet I have to have my phone all the way up to listen.
Because I fear the clipping out at the top.
I play a mix of styles, so it might be folk, jazz, house or anything, and would like it all to be loud(ish) - I turn up the channel volume if I am playing an album track - so in the room it all sounds one level.
So, questions: do I set all the levels low on all the analgoue elements and the Zoom - and just boost it all in the laptop later?
Or try to work out (trial and error) the best settings on the mixer (channel and master) and then I have a dynamic range, but it means it’s not artificially boosted in the laptop?
Or is the clipping issue because the Zoom is not set to take in the music properly? And I need to allow for louder input?
Any thoughts gratefully received.
I moved house nearly five years ago and have only done one mix and it came out ok-ish.
I can hear where it is clipping. I just want to sort it and then be able to set it recording on a random Friday evening!
Nice selection! big fan of Paula Tape
Zoom recorders clip really easily. I set the input gain to minimum on mine and leave alot of ‘headroom’ (space before clipping ice. Meters are way below full).
Try and keep your levels consistent when you’re mixing, then “normalize” the recorded file afterwards. What you’re trying to do here is make it louder (but hopefully not amplify too much noise at the same time). Clicks and pops from vinyl can compromise the effectiveness of this though. They’re normally fairly obvious in the waveform of the file, if you can be arsed you can zoom right in and smooth them out (various ways of doing this but all a bit fiddly if you’re still getting to grips with the software and general audio editing malarkey).
Good luck and look forward to listening.
Thanks mate. It’s a bit rough as I was quite wonky but I think it adds to the drama!
Thank you.
Ok, so I’ll aim for minus 12 to minus 6 on the Zoom and ensure I leave the rotaries fairly stable, definitely leave the EQs.
Then try to raise all volume in Garageband or Audacity.
I’m ok with vinyl noise.
Much appreciated. It was bugging me but this has given me the nudge to try again!
