Leaving London?

Just recently moved from Edinburgh and loved it there. A great city for getting about on foot. I was pretty close to the sea which I absolutely loved and was still only a 30-40 minute walk from the centre.

After growing up in Yorkshire I have always considered leaving London for greener pastures but have been here since 1997 and don’t see myself ever leaving. Friends have managed the move out, some successfully, some not for the same reasons described above. I Have grown quite fond of South East London and it’s been interesting to see the change in demographics over the last ten years as gentrification has crept in. It would be nice for the kids to have a bit more freedom, access to nature, a larger garden and be closer to family but the benefits of growing up in such a diverse environment with access to so much culture are too great to make the leap.

Yes it’s become very trendy although the locals are up in arms about the new Sainsbury’s being built where the car wash is. I am personally all for it. It’s a bit of a shopping black hole around there unless you want some niche ingredients from the Deli!

Gavin that’s so far from the Cornwall of my experience - which is full of brilliant, creative open-minded people ploughing their own eccentric furrow - - mainly near the South Coast.

Which is not to deny the shit you encountered - but to say there is a good time to be had down there and good peeps too.

Is that whats going in there? See I must admit I’m not that into that as we have enough in the area. I get the feeling these areas feel like villages as they don’t have the supermarket… Ah well.

There is a good vibe down there at the minute but that sort of development is inevitable. I would prefer something other than a Sainsbury’s as they can afford to undercut the smaller shops but more choice is generally not a bad thing.

I do like the village feel down there. Lovely views from blythe hill and the butchers is pretty decent.

I’ve seen posters around about a new record shop in Catford, hope to check it out soon. Lorenzo’s shop in brockley is worth dig. He’s a top lad as well.

Tis true, there are nice folk of course, but there are the opposite too, just wanted to make the OP aware it isn’t all roses. Having an actual derogatory word in common usage (Emmet) for outsiders still baffles me.
Not so dissimilar to ‘No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs’ really.
I’d post the screen grabs I have of the Scarecrow thread from FB but not sure what that would achieve.
I have to say it’s mostly prevalent in rural communities though.

The Emmets pay Cornwall’s bills.

Not my water bill they don’t! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Yeah briefly checked Lorenzo’s out in between the first and second lockdown. Hope it survives COVID - was an unfortunate time to open a shop. Isn’t the Catford one the same people that ran the one in Beckenham Place Park? I think they got forced out from there or something like that.

Is Emmets that bad? It usually just means tourists who are unable to reverse their massive cars up narrow lanes… Here in Devon we would say Grockles… it has no racial or xenophobic connotations…

there’s an animated show from wales called Gogs which is shown on TV all over GB, Gogs is an offensive term used by southern welsh to describe the apparently backward north.

xenophobic | zenəˈfōbik, ˌzēnəˈfōbik |
adjective
having or showing a dislike of or prejudice against people from other countries.

I’ve never heard it said in a complimentary way, so I guess yes… :man_shrugging: :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

but you’re not from another country…

Gatto helps in there sometimes. Its the bloke who was in Beckenham Place Park… Not sure what he is on Discogs but its that guy. I’ll find out.

This is the bloke who was in the mansion in Beckenham Place Park, his name is Owain:

Loving this topic… it’s very zeitgeisty at the moment.

Crystal Palace resident here - sounds like there can be some good South East London real-life meet-up action once we’re allowed out again.

Living in Bristol and specifically BS3 for the last 10 years have seen a massive influx of 30 something couples from “that London” moving into the area, looking for the good life, having realised they can get a 3 bed terrace for less than the price of a studio apartment in London.

I can see why too, Bristol is really pretty and central Bristol is pocket sized compared to London so meeting friends is a stroll not a cross town tube / bus / Uber affair. Culturally the city punches way above its weight given only half a million or so population

To be fair it’s massively inflated house prices but as a beneficiary to some extent of that I’m not massively bothered. My area is becoming more diverse and has better bars / restaurants / indie shops every year. At one point I heard there were fifty couple a week moving to Bristol from London which seems unbelievable but maybe it’s not totally fanciful.

Anyway if your looking for a soft landing outside the capital you could do worse than joining us here in cider land. I came in ‘96 with the strong intention of heading straight back to Manchester after university and well, I haven’t left yet…
