Not my taste in music (although I did enjoy the film), but Kneecap do seem to be the latest in a long lineage of musical artists stretching all the way from Bill Haley via the Sex Pistols, Beastie Boys (!!) and the So Solid Crew that are coming to murder us all in our beds.
āWhilst I appreciate that our Prime Minister does have a lot on his plate what with Israel, Russia, Trump, the economy and crime, i wonder if he can confirm if any action is being taken against the Irish rap group Kneecap following their deplorable comments about the Right Honourable Members of this Houseā - some backbench twat of an MP no one had ever heard of who wants his 5 minutes on Mail Online.
I find this whole episode fascinating as a microcosm of this particular moment in time tbh. Nuance, critical thinking, being open to ideas that go against your own, are pretty much a thing of the past.
We are seeing people on the right showing freedom of speech is not quite the fundamental absolute they have claimed. Of course, this is not cancel cultureā¦
There is not any issue that is as politicised, and brings out these extreme emotions as the Israel/Palestine conflict. Protesting Israelās bombing of innocent men, women and children with support for a group that bombed innocent men women and children in Syria, is⦠stupid at best, but much, much more problematic if otherwise.
This case reminds me of the 2 Spanish rappers - Pablo Hasel and Valtonyc - who were prosecuted for āinsulting the kingā, āglorifying ETAā and āinciting violence against the Guardia Civilā. One of them went on the run in Belgium to avoid going to jail.
Of course, legally it gets a bit murky. Someone inciting violence v some stoned rapper letting off steam in his bedroom. re: freedom of speech, I suppose you draw the line where there are specific threats OR if your crowd is impressionable enough to take you literally
Either way, there aināt no publicity more golden/lucrative than an outraged establishmentā¦
