John Martyn - Digging In…

We’ve just run a post by In Sheep’s Clothing Hi–Fi on their favourite John Martyn deep cuts and b sides. So much to choose from…

This is great. Always loved his popular stuff… hadn’t ever looked any further

Some more Martyn magic

Looking forward to reading this! Martyn is one of my all-time favourites. Tortured, but brilliant.

His Classics Revisited record has a few beautiful takes on old songs – in particular I Don’t Wanna Know and Man In The Station. I can’t find these online anywhere so I’ll rip them from my copy and share them here.

I also highly recommend reading Small Hours for a good insight into his life and the influence (good and bad) he had on people around him.

Heaven and Earth is an all time favourite. Broken reed on the recording sounds just right.

Been rinsing the second CD of the Grace and Danger in the car recently. Great read.

Bit off topic maybe – but this was always a big fave and ticks a lot of TP boxes:

I still play this out a lot in bar sets, still sounds killer to me.

So good…

I was very lucky to catch him live in maybe 2005/6. I’m a bit young to have seen him before his health issues so he was in a wheelchair by then, but still magnificent. Played Couldn’t Love You More and it was just magic.

He also played this, which I’m putting forward as my deep cut choice

Dunno if it counts as a deep cut, and I’m unfamiliar with lots of JM’s back cat, but i think this is ace https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XhFREU2NPrg

The dub of Dealer- personal favourite -a companion piece to ‘Penultimate Zone’ and likely inspired by it to my mind- only on the b of the Dancing 7”

Funnily enough I’ve just been having a bit of a John Martyn revival (something I seem to do every 2-4 years). His live shows where he’s using the echoplex to build these incredible, hypnotic grooves are magic.

I never get board of hearing this

There’s 100s of music ideas in that one song alone.

This 7” has been on the waitlist for so long, never seen a copy in the wild!

She’s a Lover is a new one to me, what a great track (and a great article).

Sharing a JM playlist I put together a while back covering some similar ground…

I was at this gig here years ago and he was completely cuckoo at this stage, his son was on stage with him and it was sad at times between songs but as soon as the music hits in it was like switch just went off in his head…

Even this late on in his crazy life, his voice is still pretty amazing.
