This is genius, DJ Nature twisting up Wang Chung from the To Live & Die In L.A. soundtrack…I hate the term “proto-techno” but I guess this is…

I’ve always loved Todd Terje’s edit of ‘Superstition’ because it does everything but the hook

Does anyone know what this is and the OG? Is it an edit? Samples from several tracks with some original production elements?

(I know the Todd R sample)

Jo Jo Zep was a pseudonym for Australian musician Joe Camelleri. Throughout the late 70s and early 80’s he and his band The Falcons put out a string of great LPs which mixed RnB, soul, ska, bluebeat, rock and pop and electro pop. This isn’t an edit - it’s a track from 1983 he made which he co produced with Eddie Rayner of Split Enz.

Thanks for the back story. I wasn’t saying it was an edit, it was posted in response to Paul asking what track the Needs Ending edit sampled.

ah - my bad…the reply layout sometimes confuses

No worries, I’ve got confused with that as well.

I usually find edits to be akin to the mashup craze of the early 2000’s - a tired fad. Most are lazy, pointless 128 bar intro and outro loops with the original squeezed inbetween with an extra kick drum and some swirling sounds that don’t do anything particularly inventive.

This thread is giving me joy to once again hear some headz who understand the craft of transformative reworking. This example from Mark E is a firm favourite - taking UB40’s slinky slow chugger “Don’t Break My Heart” into new dimensions.
