Sail On Sailor is one of my faves as well, it’s an anthem for perseverance.
A few years back I had a low paying, physically tiring, dead end job for an unappreciative boss and many times during that period when i’d finished for the day and was cycling home knackered, Sail On Sailor would be an inspiration, i’d be listening to it on repeat with my earbuds in, a kind of pride in getting through the daily drudge once again.
I love Brian Wilson, a true musical hero.
Saw him do Pet Sounds at Southbank and later Smile at the Liverpool Empire.
A few gems I was listening to just yesterday. Listen to the backing vocals on this!
A Day In The Life Of A Tree (Track & Backing Vocals)
The tranquil “cooling off” period, post Smile and Pet Sounds.
Let The Wind Blow (Stereo Mix / Remastered 2017)
I was blown away when I first heard this, still am. A Smile classic.
Any version of this is sad and haunting, especially these two.

Farewell Brian.
Brian Wilson at the Royal Festival Hall… “Kick off your shoes!! Put your shoes back on again!” Bless him.
I bought an accordian once just so I could play along to Pet Sounds. Just some of the greatest music ever made for me. Pure beauty.
Yeah it’s gorgeous…
saw BW live in 2016 with a touring version of the BBs (Jardine was the only one left) he looked frail and the voice quavered a bit, but it was no less magical. Remember one of the Lowlifes at the Corsica finishing with ‘God Only Knows’ and that was quite a communal moment
That was the last ever low life … until the next one ![]()
They just played it on the radio while I was walking the dog
Got me right there
More comebacks than Kiss
i don’t know because i wasn’t there but i’m pretty sure “join in the chant” was hella balearic.
Its on Balearic Beats Vol I ( rightly so)
I wasnt at Amesnia in 87 but I did buy the casstte LP in 91
They say “never meet your heroes” but on a Summer’s day in December, 2002 I wasn’t about to miss the opportunity of attending a signing session at HMV Pitt St Mall with none other than Brian Wilson himself. I had no preconceived notions that it would be a relaxed and jovial Brian that we would be encountering, and my intuition proved correct. He looked tired and like he’d rather be anywhere else that day. After all, it’s not like he needed extra promo to sell out the first ever performance of Pet Sounds in Australia at the State Theater that week.
As we waited in line, I watched as fellow Beach Boys tragics nervously worked their way towards the table he sat at, Brian growing increasingly impatient to the point of slapping the table after each album presented to him and exclaiming “Next”! By the time I reached the table, he was barely looking up but I did get to say a “thank you” after he signed my bootleg copy of Smile. Fellow Redeye staff member Oren Ambarchi was with me and of course, never being one to run with the crowd, he perversely held a copy of the lesser lauded Beach Boys album “Love You”. When Oren presented it to Brian, he seemed to snap out of his mood, looked up at Oren and exclaimed “GREAT ALBUM!”
The concert I attended at the State Theatre that week was the only time a show has brought me to tears - and that was during the intermission! I think the gravity of what I was experiencing after listening to the music of Brian and his brothers for the better part of 20 years really hit home. It’s a night I’ll never forget.
Fast forward to 18 min mark. Ace!
Lofty just text me some sad news…
Rest in peace Norman a true legend and gent who kept Flying going from Kensington. I will never forget your generosity patience and endeavor
One of a kind mate! Love always. The boss.
I was only just talking about Mott the Hoople and Mick Ralphs with my mate in Amsterdam the other day. RIP.
Lalo Schifrin … where do you even start? Shifting Gears, I guess. Great innings.
Teenage favourite of course
