In Memoriam…

Gwen McCrae…

This will never cease to get a floor properly moving. Will play it tomorrow at my wedding gig in her honor.

Very sad. She recorded a hilarious voice note for a friend’s answerphone when he was helping out at a festival 20 years ago.
I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve phoned him up and said ‘Alex, I’m going to call you back, but dont pick up because I want to play Gwen’ (to whoever I’m stood with):joy:

It was Dedbeat weekender Gwen came over for in 2002 ish. I messaged my friend last night…

“She was such a humble lady, she was working as a nurse at the time when she came over to play”

Not only a great artist!

I’ll always remember a phone conversation I once had with her, I worked for BMG records at the time in the accounts dept. and had to call her early in the morning, I was quite nervous about it as it was, and when she answered it was obvious I’d woken her up. I was really apologetic but she was lovely “don’t worry honey, it’s fine, it’s fine…”

I bought a copy of Quiet Fire only yesterday. Poignant.
What a voice.

One of my go to albums, the vocals and understated arrangements never fail to amaze me.

“killing me softly” - one of my first musical memories. it seemed so weird compared to everything else, the vocal performance, the arrangements, the lyrics, the little movements in the song. my dad had the album, i’d ask to hear it over and over while sitting by the speaker.

i recognize lauryn hill’s talents, but i hated the cover. felt like pro-level karaoke. never a fan of the fugees, and for whatever reason, lauryn just left me cold.

Oh man. When we were stoned out of our minds when young ‘Compared To What’ always sounded so good…

This is the only video I can find of her singing this song live.
Love love love this tune.

This is my favorite song of hers and I’m amazed at the fact Stevie Wonder wrote it and gave it to her. A few years ago The Reflex released an edit with Stevie’s “rough” guide vocals, it’s fantastic.

That Stevie mix is the absolute bomb. Stays faithful
to the Maurro mix imo, with a Reflex Polish. Surprised it’s still reasonably cheap on the ‘cogs.
