Amazing life, the ultimate survivor. ‘Broken English’ was my fave #RIP
I saw that Brian Murphy has passed. Largely forgotten in Britain but still remembered with fondness in Spain, George & Mildred was one of the biggest shows on Spanish tv in the post-dictatorship years (don’t ask)
Aussies loved George and Mildred also.
Fucking hell. I knew his face but couldn’t place him. Then it came to me. He was the barman that ushered Jimmy into the back room to buy pills in Quadrophenia!
He’s in The Long Good Friday as well.
irv gotti. he of murder inc. his death is getting some press around here, so i thought i’d mention it.
he presided over a label and era of hip hop i never really cared for. i liked a couple of the ashanti tracks but that era of gravel-voiced pop rap dripping with mob references? corny.
My wife worked for Polydor (?) / Universal this era so knew it all
Some really good tracks , loafds of drivel but he made a sound
I always think if I was doing karaoke 'Your Always on Time ’ would be a good one
RIP - so young! Diabetes is a real MF, horrible illness that can take 15-20 years off your life…
100% with you on that era of hip-hop, rappers were sounding like bags of rocks. Some good music in that era, but I have zero nostalgia for that style/genre…
Obviously all that Ja Rule + Ashanti stuff was terrible but Irv was responsible for a few decent mid-late 90s tunes by Jay Z, Mic Geronimo, Cash Money Click etc. Rarely got more adventurous than looping up an easily recognisable sample but nothing wrong with that.
!K7 boss Horst Weidenmuller…
fond memories of the X-Mix series combining then cutting-edge animation + DJ mixes
that’s sad - iK7 distributed so many labels and artists to the US, it felt like there for a while in the early 2ks they were a good third of what we were bringing into the store. we talked about buying from them direct but it didn’t pencil out - it was easier to continue buying from US distros like syntax and groove.
props to iK7, they propped up a lot of music. !K7 Music - Wikipedia
Rick Buckler. The Jam.
Damn. Vale Rick. Underrated drummer.
Ironically it’s Funeral Pyre that I’ve chosen to include here to showcase his (fire and) skill on the sticks.
They were a total powerhouse rhythm section, Rick and Bruce. Feels like part of my childhood into teenhood just died. Very sad
Yup, the soundtrack to my teenage years
Tommy Hunt of The Flamingos
looks like west coast dj hero ernie munson has passed. i don’t know anything more about it, only seeing posts from garth, sunshine jones, etc.
also, this is somewhat hyper-local, but seattle hip hop pioneer “nasty nes” rodriguez has died.
growing up in portland - there was next to no hip hop on the radio. i heard a couple of “fresh tracks” tapes from nes and couldn’t believe there was something like that on the west coast - seattle absolutely had something portland didn’t. first time i heard “square dance rap”!
That’s sad, DiY brought him over a few times, he was pretty good.
