Ahhh man, wasn’t really a fan back in the Radio 1 days but grew to like his R2 afternoon show and missed it when he got replaced by Scott Mills.
R.I.P.

when we had R1 at work (89 / 90) I used to hate his show but then missed it when he went replaced by someone else

Mr Spoons etc, so annoying, and the posse were dreadful but I think he had quite reasonable taste in music compared to the dreadful DLT/Simon Bates lot. He seemed to be fan of the Lacey Lady Soul Weekender end of soul/funk judging by some of what he played in his Radio 2 days any way.

Wasn’t for me but no denying how good he was at what he did and, judging by the tributes being paid, a thoroughly lovely guy too

Yeah, used to like Serious Jockin’, listened to it whilst cycling home after finishing work on a Friday, good way to start the weekend.

Yeah, I got impression he was a real Black American music fan, like Tony Blackburn, unlike a lot of those R1 dinosaurs who weren’t probably even into music at all.

I did my apprenticeship in the Steve Wright in the afternoon period. We would have radio one on from 8-4.30, I listened to Mike Reid, Simon Bates, Garry Davis and Steve Wright(with the occasional radio 2). As an underground type teen I generally hated every minute of it(by principle as much as anything else), but I did used to chuckle at a lot of the comedians that went on to become quite famous. I ended up working for a few weeks on a production that Steve Wright was heading back in '96. He was literally one of the nicest people I have ever met. We had a particular evening towards the end of the gig when we talked about our families(I hadn’t had a good early life). He was wise generous and super interested in other people. That is something that was not normal in Media/film etc. believe me. I’m quite sad. Wish that I’d have got to know him better.
