Australian soul legend Renee Geyer, passed away today at age 69.

RENÉE GEYER

11 SEPTEMBER 1953 – 17 JANUARY 2023

It is with immense sadness that we announce that Renée Geyer has passed away from complications following hip surgery. While in hospital, it was discovered that Renée also had inoperable lung cancer. She was in no pain and died peacefully amongst family and friends.

Naturally, we are all utterly devastated.

Just last month, Renée sang to a full house and was looking forward to another busy year ahead doing what she loved most – performing for her loyal fans around the country.

Renée is one of the most highly regarded singers in contemporary music – her unique vocal sound influences countless singers to this day.

Renée was irrepressible, cheeky and loyal and her musical legacy speaks for itself, with her performing and recording career spanning five decades. She was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2005; in 2013 she was the first woman to be inducted into the Music Victoria Hall of Fame; and she received the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award at the Australian Women in Music Awards in 2018.

Renée lived her life as she performed – on her own terms and to the fullest. Beloved and respected, she was a force of nature and a national treasure, and her passing leaves a giant void in the Australian music industry.

I’m a huge Byrds, CSNY fan and although it’s never good when one of your favourites passes, I must say, the Cros dying wasn’t a shock. He’s been suffering ill health for a very long time and truth be told, the fact that he made it through the 80’s is a miracle. His is the voice in CSN that was the syrup, the sweetness, the real true hippie spirit. Sure he could be a total nightmare for others to be around, but cocaine mixed with a huge rock star ego will sometimes have that effect. He was a great songwriter as well - Guinnevere, Almost Cut My Hair, Triad, Deja Vu, Long Time Gone, Everybody’s Been Burned, and THAT solo album. No stranger to burning bridges, it is evident throughout the documentary Remember My Name that he was haunted by a sadness due to the estrangement he had with his former bandmates. He was a difficult man but he left the world with so much beauty in those songs. RIP Cros.

I thought he was a bit of a pain in the ass in interviews etc, but wrote some great tunes which I listened to a lot. RIP

My dad introduced me to Deja Vu was I was 14 , it was always on in the car. A few years later when I had grown my hair out and my mum and dad were leaning on me to get it cut I would explain that David Crosby had advised me against it . His music and spirit has been with me ever since.
