Bill Russell, basketball and Civil Rights legend. Played for the Boston Celtics, won a shit ton of titles. Didn’t take a lot of shit.
RIP
he lived here in the seattle area and would often come to storm games (or, back before the team was stolen - sonics games). he’d end up on the jumbotron and every person would stand up and applaud. i saw him out on the concourse and was fully starstruck. just to be a few feet away from him felt like an honor.
Celtics fan despise him even though he single-handedly dragged them to the Larry Bird era.
He wrote a piece in 1987 about how racist Boston sports fans and the city in general is.
I have lived in a lot of places and am originally from South Africa and I’ve never experienced racism like I have in beantown. It’s unbelievable at times.
And boring old sectarian BS. I lived there for a year in the late 80’s. Backwards AF.
such a beautiful track #RIP
Such a beautiful clear voice, very sad news. Seemed a really sound person too.
Lamont Dozier

Wow, I didn’t know that she did this too. I only know the song from the great Lani Hall version.
Same here - lovely spacey production as well! Playing it on my radio show tomorrow, so many thanks @Hierbas
Masta F - check out the OG version by it’s author, Leslie Duncan
edit - “Live” Livvy version!
just found out Lamont Dozier wrote Going Back to My Roots. I always thought it was Richie Havens! I do much prefer the Havens version to Odyssey’s though. And then there’s the mighty FPI Project too (a whole other debate for another thread!)
Lamont Dozier was an absolute musical titan. The more you dig the more you realize how much he did.
I mean this whole song is magic but the second half is so special…

Bought the original Odyssey 12’’ in '81 and never knew this was on the flip then. Still play it today.
