In Memoriam…

Very sad about this. Sad and embarrassed to live in this idiotic country with idiotic leaders. Dom was an editor for Mixmag in another life, wrote a few good books on rave culture too.

Horrible.

it is a shame, and i could probably go off a bit on how journalism as-an-occupation has turned into such a dangerous thing over the last 10 to 25 years or so - but i won’t. it should be obvious.

dude understood how to talk to people and connect and make it pay (which is to say that it was DESERVED - that’s the point, right - connecting with people?), and way back when, i absolutely recognized his name from mastheads and so on. even with the limited information i have, it’s easy to tell that he didn’t deserve this.

i wish those that knew him kindness and peace, and i hope that those who were inspired by what he did don’t stop.

He was murdered with another guy who was a fierce defender of the native population and who was constantly in the face of the folk around that area committing crimes in the natives’ territory. It really is a jungle out there, and yes, it is quite dangerous, but it’s beyond belief that this can happen so easily and openly. Our idiot motherfucker of a president makes it a lot worse, of course.

I’ve been following this terrible case and feel a bit sick actually, not just at what happened to these men but at the failure of Brazil and the world to end the terrible injustice inflicted on the Amazon tribes, wildlife and ecosystem. By greed, selfishness and our neverending need for burgers. My British Dad has lived in crime-ridden Fortaleza in the north of the country over 20 years and is unfortunately very pro-Bolsonaro “the last stand against Marxism and anarchy” and very anti Lula “so corrupt” and we’ve had many an argument about it, I just have to change the subject now when he goes off on one. I didn’t know DP but I think a few people will have known him via Mixmag. A real journey from there to become a fine international journalist.

As a population, we deserve the calibre of candidates we have. Which is to say, both terrible populist backwards power hungry morons. Honestly it gets harder and harder to believe this country can lift itself out of this cycle of bullshit, but thr only way to do it is ourselves. Outside “help” is what got us here anyway.

What a brilliant chatacter, played it to perfection. Sobering that I’m older now than he was when the show kicked off :grimacing:

Tony Sirico was an actual mobster before he became an actor. Check out this interview when he was a lot younger. Dude was acting things he’d already done/seen.
