In Memoriam…

Lovely mix this, R.I.P.

Oh dear, I love this mix, very sad news

Just saw that Jarle Bråthen passed. One of the lesser known Norwegian producers from the Full Pupp stable. Made a few lush tunes under his Ytre Rymden Dansskola alias. RIP

He was literally one of the best. A joy to know and work with. Always seeing the world from a slightly wonky lovely angle x x

Here in the states, we lost a TV legend in Ted Turner. Not only did he expand cable TV and what it could be (CNN, et al.), he instituted maybe one of the greatest inventions here: Turner Classic Movies. TCM ran a huge vault of films, 24/7, as part of any cable package without commercials, a novelty here. I grew up on it, and it absolutely had a positive impact on my perception on art and movies. His influence on animation was also important with the advent of Cartoon Network, which helped bring golden era Japanese animation to US audiences for the first time, among many other things. He was outspoken about the environment, climate change, nuclear weapons, the peace movement, LGBTQ+, and hated all the right wing TV tycoons.

absolutely heartbroken

i was fortunate enough to have known chris, for about 23 years and watched him making his way, through the ranks here and then coming out of, his jeans half way down his backside cocoon and bursting out in all his glorious colour, sardonic one liners and movement that many of us got to embrace and love.

we connected over music. i’d recently done a mix called “mullets r us” and he loved it. wanting to know all the tracks and pilfering a few of them for himself. i didn’t mind at all, cos music is for sharing right?. we bonded during late nights and into the morning, over the “mixed up in the hague II” (this is where his party Bad Passion got its name) and when Colin, Lucy and I decided to throw a party at The Tyneside Cinema with Greg Wilson in July 2004, Chris was the person I asked to warm up for Greg - or as Chris was known then, “Duke Boks”.

He was so supportive of the “Suono Sundays” we started doing and it’s a real shame he didn’t come and play for Col, Danny and I - as Chris had amazing taste in music.

I didn’t get to see too much of him when he moved to London, for various reasons on my side, but we were in regular touch via his piss taking nicknames for me that only he was allowed. I’d always laugh when I heard his voice and it was either a straight up “Roly baby” or “Rolando” or “Roland”. Cheeky / insulting, but he had the charm to carry it off.

I’m so pleased that he made so many connections in London with his new crew and from there, across the world - whether through the fashion industry or his music.

He had the razor wit and patter that you need to survive, 2 days into the afters in a random sitting room in newcastle, with the worst set of absolute bastards and the musical taste to help soundtrack, such surroundings.

Chris, was a beautiful human being. In all senses of the words. How he handled and navigated these last few years with his illness, with such dignity and humour, was inspiring.

I was fortunate to have seen him 2 weeks ago, before I saw Faze Action and got to hold him close and told him I loved him. I’m sure he knew, just how much we all loved him, so dearly.

Let’s all carry round and keep sharing his kindness and child like wonder and enthusiasm for having a good time

xx

Sorry for the loss, but glad you recently spent time and told him you loved him. I try my best to do the same with the people that matter.
